My AES17 dryer leaves black marks on the clothes off of the rubber gasket at the rear of the drum, inside the dryer. It is the only place black marks could be coming from, and the marks look just like something black was rubbing against the fabric.

If your clothes get marked or torn in your dryer, check these:RollersRear sealFront glidesFront sealRollersYour
dryer may use rollers, or wheels, to support the rear of the clothes
drum. When these are worn out, they may cause the clothes drum to drop
down slightly, which can pinch the clothes between the top of the
clothes drum and the rear of the dryer interior. When the rollers wear
out, you need to replace the whole set.Rear sealYour
dryer may have a felt-like seal at the rear of the drum. If this seal
is worn, torn, or missing, clothes can get caught and torn in the space
between the clothes drum and the rear of the dryer interior. When the
rear seal wears out, you need to replace it.Front glidesYour
dryer probably uses nylon or plastic glides at the front of the clothes
drum for support. When these are worn out, they may cause the clothes
drum to drop down slightly, which can pinch the clothes between the top
of the clothes drum and the front of the dryer interior. When the glides
wear out, you need to replace them as a set.Front sealMany

The first thing to check is whether there is something caught in the drum rim (both front and back). Feel around the circumference of the drum in both places for a piece of clothing or pocket item jammed in there. If all is clear, then most dryers have drum glides on the front that will wear. Those aren't expensive and not that hard to replace for the mechanically inclined. A bad rear support roller is also a possibility. To replace it , the drum will probably have to be removed. Drums aren't that hard to get in and out, depending again on your mechanical ability. Hope that helps
Hi. Thanks for using fixya. I can help you. When clothes get marked or torn in your dryer, check these:

Squeak is caused by a worn out roller rolling metal to metal - Most dryers have rollers, felts and drum slides to balance drum rotation:
When rollers wear off, black powder leaks to rear felts and black marks are left on clothes.
Same thing happens when drum slides wear off (black marks are left on clothes)
The clothes are getting pinched between the drum and the housing. Check the gasket(s) where the drum turns on the housing at the front and back. If the gasket is worn there is a small gap that clothes can get pulled into. The marks are from the worn metal. Lighter weight clothes are more likely to get caught. The gaskets can be replaced by removing the drum.
Folks,
Yes, you can use white vinegar to clean the dryer surfaces inside.. and the goo you see may be some of the gasket cement that secures the felt seal to the drum and s breaking free. I suggest you do a thorough examination around the entiore drum circumference for any traces of this material and clean it off with a single edge razor and solvent such as alcohol or mineral spirits. Be sure to allow ample time for the residue from those solvents to dissipate Before cycling clothes in that dryer. I hpe this helps you. Please post yopur replies if these suggestions did not solve your problems and we can take a closer look.
Regards,
Rick
Is the residue coming from the back or front of the drum? Most dryers are equipped with 2 drum roller supports in the rear under the drum. You may have a drum roller that is going bad and some of the rubber residue is getting past the drum seal. Some dryers are quipped with an additional pair of drum rollers under the front of the drum as well. I would check all the drum rollers to see if they are all in good shape. A definite symptom of a bad drum roller is finding black residue along the outside of the drum where the rollers ride. You will have to open the dryer cabinet to see the outside of the drum. Also, check the rear drum seal to make sure it is not crimped or folded inwards in the drum. The felt seal in the back should should ride evenly all the way around the drum and should not be that visible inside the drum itself. That is, you may see some of the seal, but you shouldn't see part of it folded inside the drum or bits of it tattered or torn. I hope this makes sense to you. Let me know if this helps.
I have this same dryer going the same thing....HELP!
