SOURCE: Need to replace pump Impeller on A.O. Smith

To get to the Impeller you need to remove a series of bolts, or a large clamp, that holds the two halves of the pump together. Once you do that, if their is a diffuser (housing that goes over the impeller), remove it. To remove the impeller, you need to lock the motor shaft. You can do this a couple different ways depending on the motor. There will either be a small cap that grants access to the motor shaft on the back of the motor, or you remove a larger housing that grants access to the wiring and other components in the back of the motor. If it's the small cap, then you can hold the shaft with a wrench. If it's the larger housing, then you can slip a wrench (probably 7/16") under the thermal overload switch and onto the shaft to lock it in place. Now you can unscrew the impeller. Check to see if the impeller has a screw in the center. If so remove this first. It will be reverse thread. The impeller should spin off counter clockwise. If the impeller is very tight, be careful not to damage it. If you don't have an impeller wrench, I strap wrench, or very large locking pliers with a rag around the impeller works well. Hope this helps. If you need further assistance post a reply in the comments, and don't hesitate to leave a good thumb rating if you found this helpful. Thanks, and good Luck!

My pool originally had a 2 speed AO Smith pump motor. Several years back it was replaced with an AO Smith single speed motor. I am replacing that motor with a new AO Smith single speed Centurion Switchless...

Is it going to run on 230V then? If so you would normally use red and black. The white wire should be a neutral and the ground wire is obviously ground.

Do you have a meter you can use to confirm the voltage between the wires? If you do you'll want to start with red and white since you seem to think black was not being used before. If the voltage reads 230 and the motor is set up for 230 then attach one wire to L1 and the other to L2...it will not matter which is connected where as long as one is on each terminal. Insulate the black and ground the ground lead to the motor ground screw.

If the voltage is not 230 between those two check between red and black. If that is the 230 then insulate white and put red and black to L1 and L2.

Installed new pump primed the pump and then turned on, but nothing is working. Is there something else I'm suppose to do?

Make sure your pump is connected to the proper voltage. There are 2 settings High Voltage and Low Voltage. Follow diagram for your voltage. The A and B settings are for the inside motor wiring and the lines are for you wire sources.
