The screen is visible, but it looks like the backlight is not working. It is just dim, and only on the left 1/3 of the screen
Do you have the CD's That originally Came with the Laptop? If so, put that in before you start your computer and boot from cd. While your computer is starting up it should say "Press any key to boot from cd" Press a key to load the Cd Diagnostics Program.
If not, go to support.dell.com - Click on Drivers - It will ask you for the "Express Service Code" of your laptop, which is marked on a label on the bottom of your laptop. Here you can download the Diagnostic tools (found on the cd) in the case you do not still have the cd.
Run the entire set of diagnostic tools. (They are very intuitive and easy to run) If they come back with a specific error code, you will know what the problem is.
You can then contact dell with the code & or the symptoms you are having at their number 1-800-624-9896 which is 24/7.
The problem could be a handful of things.
1) There is a plug underneath the laptop keyboard that may have came loose which can cause the dim image.
2)The graphics card has become dislodged & or overheated
3) The cord between the motherboard & Screen has become frayed.
4) The Backlight (lights right behind the LCD screen have gone out on the 1/3 of the screen) This scenario is only the cost of the lights and labor to replace them.
Tech Support will be able to narrow this down for you completely. If you do this on your own without them, you can void your warranty, in the case you have one.
Also if the above doesn't work, you don't have a warranty, and don't feel comfortable taking the laptop apart to look at the inside parts you can do the following. Turn the laptop on, then clear out where the laptop is set down. Open the laptop screen to a full 180 degrees.
Instead of the laptop being _| it would be ___ Do this 5 times, while in between each time you to this, checking to see if the picture is any better. This will force the cable that connects to your lcd to move around, which I personally have experienced on an Dell Inspiron 8600 (Which I am currently on). Opening and shutting the screen like that fixed the problem for a short while. It will tell you it is simply a cable and not any hardware issue. The cable is relatively cheap, and should only take 30 minutes worth of labor if you choose to take it to the local computer store to disessemble the laptop and work on it.

Hi. Well i took it to a local repair shop and the problem was the Inverter. As soon as they tried a new one the lcd display went back to normal. They said that because most of the parts are made in China for Dell they are nor 100% quality. It cost be about 70 quid including labour which wasnt bad. Having said that the laptop was only 13months old. But i am annoyed at Dell for using defective components in brand new laptops. I dont think i will be purchasing Dell in the future.
When you plug into the an AC outlet, how does it look then?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop and I have the same problem. The left side of the screen is much dimmer than the rest of the screen. It is the same when it's plugged into AC.
It is an Inspiron 1520 which I bought in Japan. I live in Brazil now and Dell here says they don't produce this model here.
I thought changing the backlight could solve the problem but I am not sure since the laptop is not that old (1 and a half year) and it is only the 1/3 left side.
I have a dell inspiron 1525 for 13 months now and just outside its warranty.
It has developed a dark area on the LHS of the LCD screen stretching almost to the top of the screen.
I can use the laptop and sometimes the screen will go blank but the system is still running normally in the background and i can faintly see the operating system.
If i plug in the adapter the screen goes bright and then just goes off again. This happens every time i plug in my adapter charger.
