I get this behaviour in email clients from time to time as well. It's usually due to updating the client (email, messages, messenger, text, whatever) to the latest version. Various folks like MS and Google and others seem to think we all want our communications 'grouped' in some fashion, so every time they update, they give you their preferred setting, and you need to turn it off again. The setting is just a view (sometimes called a thread) of conversations between you and others. I prefer my texts grouped just by recipient/sender and chronologically.
If your phone was used to forward your texts to someone else they should show up in the 'sent' side of the list, or in your 'recent' messages. Unless they deleted them as they sent them.
I'd lean to app misbehaviour before conspiracy... and if you have texts you don't want seen, put a lock on the phone, delete messages as you send them, or don't send them in the first place ;-)

Delete your entire Conversation History

1. In the Messenger contact list, click Messenger ' Preferences.
2. Click Conversation History.
3. Click the View Conversation History button.
4. From the "Conversation History" window, choose the type of conversation history you would like to delete from the View All drop down.
5. Check any of the boxes next to the message or call you would like to delete.
6. At the top of the "Conversation History" window, click Actions ' Delete.
7. Click Delete.

The only way I found to do this was to reset the phone's settings. To do that, click the menu icon on the home screen, then tap Settings on the bottom right. Now tap 'Phone' and then scroll down to 'Reset Settings'. Now tap 'Master Reset', and then 'Yes'. Now enter your phone's security code (default is 0000). This will reset all of your phone's settings, including changing the messaging app back to the conversation view, but you won't lose any contacts, messages, pictures, etc on it.

To do this, you have to set it to save your messages under Preferences. First, go to the main Yahoo window, the one where you see all of your contacts and click on Messenger. Look through the list until you see Preferences. Click on Preferences and look under the category list for Archive. You have three options there, to save all messages that you send and receive, to save them but to delete them upon exiting the program, or to not save them. The first option is the one to choose if you are wanting to save ALL of the messages you have sent and received from your contacts. Remember to hit the "OK" button when you've finished making your changes.
If you are just wanting to see the most recent messages you've had with someone, open up a chat window, and without typing anything to them, click the F3 button that is at the top of your keyboard. It won't show your entire conversation history, but it will show a fair amount of your most recent conversation. If you're wanting to know what date and time the conversation took place, click the F2 key, also at the top of the keyboard. You can use that key at any time during a conversation to turn timestamps on or off.
There is no way to retrieve past conversations, unfortunately, but if you choose to save messages to archive, you'll be able to view conversations at any time you wish.

Follow these steps :
1.
Enable the ability to have a confirmation message before you delete a Yahoo! text message. Open the "My History" tab, click "Options" and check the box beside "Ask before deleting a message."
2.
Look for the "History" button at the top right side of the web page. Click the button to see every conversation in your Yahoo! chat history.
3.
Highlight the Yahoo! text message you wish to remove. You can view the entire text message below in the "My History" tab.
4.
Click the Delete button and confirm that you want to delete this text message.

Go to your inbox and tap the icon in the top right corner it ashould say something like Delete and Standard View. Tap standard view and you should see an unread message somewhere. The message that is on my phone has no sender and no subject and I can't delete it... but at least I can read it and it won't show up as a new message and when you switch back to Conversation View it will hide the message again.
