Try cleaning the fan, vents and heatsink for starters. Has it been overheating? There are a few things you can check, Take a look at this video to help troubleshoot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Yi6GNFcP3w ALSO this: http://esupport.sony.com/perl/model-home.pl?mdl=VGNFS640_W AND: http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docTypeID=DT_KNOWLEDGEARTICLES_1_1&docType=kc&externalId=C270032

SOURCE: LCD laptop screen

It is definitely the screen or the inverter. Usually the screen and inverter come as one piece. I would check with the manufacturer. Unfortunately for you, the LCD is one of the most expensive parts to replace on a laptop.

Just the simple fact of you mentioning that it works fine with an external monitor tells me that its not the video card. If it was the video card, you would see the exact same thing happening on your external monitor as well.

Hope this helps!

SOURCE: my sony viao vgn-cs215j suddenly turn off by

Sorry i nay be a month late on this thread... but better late than never. My Girlfriends sony vaio VGN-CS215J seems to be doing the exact same thing. After buying one of those computer fans that you rest the computer oneverything seems to be running normal. i would also recommend cleaning your fans inside the computer because dirt dust and grime can hold the fans back from cooling down the laptop efficiently and will cause the safety overheat shutdown to activate and shutdown your computer... that way it does catch on fire or fry any of your hardware inside of your computer.

If that does not work... your fans maybe malfunctioning or not functioning at all. this model of vaio has a grinding fan issue that can be very damaging to your cpu if not fixed.

hope this helps,
Mike Huffstutler

Vaio LCD problem

Periods.......Nice little items because they denote the End of a sentence.
See how this works?

"I have a vgn cs36gj, I was working with it, suddenly the LCD became pale black, I connected it to external monitor and it has a picture, sometimes after turning on for 30 minutes LCD start working normally, but after turning off and disconnecting power when I turn it on, it only shows a pale black picture, you know it is on but only black!"

Now you try it.........

"I have a vgn cs36gj. I was working with it, suddenly the LCD became pale black.
I connected it to external monitor and it has a picture."

Okay, I got that part.........

"sometimes after turning on for 30 minutes LCD start working normally, but after turning off and disconnecting power when I turn it on, it only shows a pale black picture, you know it is on but only black!"

WHICH LCD?
Laptop LCD?
External monitor LCD?
Man on the moon LCD?

1) If the external monitor LCD goes 'pale black', the problem is the graphics chipset.
This I do not believe

2) If the laptop LCD goes pale black, this I believe.

I have a Sony VGN-CR220E. It would turn on but all I see is a black screen. The green light on the bottom lights up but all the rest won't light up anymore especially the 3rd light that would blink,...

One thing to try is if you can, connect an external monitor to the computer. Turn it off and then back on with the external monitor on. If video on the external monitor then the problem is with the laptop monitor most likely the FL inverter or the lcd itself. If no external video, it is most likely a motherboard problem.

Sony vaio vgn nr160e laptop - no display (intermittent). Attached monitor shows display fine and laptop works fine. Screen used to flicker intermittently (last few days).

You may have a defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashes on and off or displays reddish pink hue. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickers on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replace the CCFL lamp.
To determine if the video card or the LCD is faulty, connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight. It could be a faulty inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out, usually the CCFL lamp fails before the inverter.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

Get an old monitor CRT or LCD. Connect this to the back of your laptop to the appropriate connection. Turn on this monitor and your laptop. Now on your laptops keyboard are some blue highlighted keys called function keys. Press and hold the one marked "Fn" and then press the F7 key (on my Sony - yours may be different but the key with a small blue rectangle with LCD inside a foward slash to what looks like an oval with square sides) this is the external monitor key. If the external monitor comes on with the laptops screen information then your mercury lamp in the laptops screen has died. Then a reputable repairman can replace your screen and lamp for $200. - $300. If nothing appears on the screen then most likely the video chip in your laptop has died. Replacing this will require a new motherboard for the laptop. You should contact Sony about price and any extended warranties they may have,
