Craftsman weedwacker won't start

Was working fine and then stopped. It will start and run for a few seconds and then stop. I cut the end of the small fuel line at the tank and then reinserted it. The primer bulb doesn't feel right. Isn't pumping gas like it used to, doesn't fill with gas, and sometimes won't pop back up after being pressed. I've replace the plug although the old one looked fine. Model is 358.794240

wont start. purge bulb isnt functioning, doesnt fill up as should tho i replaced it with new one, so thinking its a fuel issue put in new fuel lines, new filter in tank, tried filter on both fuel lines inside tank with no change in outcome. I even tried it without any tank filter. nothing. opened both covers on carb and didnt see a "screen" , just black diaphragm type gaskets, carb and diaphragms appeared clean. if it needs a screen where does it belong? is next step to replace diaphragms? flush carb? replace carb?$$ i know the trimmer will run, with a squirt of fuel in cylinder head, it fires right up so pretty sure its a fuel supply issue. what to do?

  • Tom Greminger Mar 23, 2009

The screen was plugged with stuff. I replaced the fuel lines and discovered the large line was plugged inside the carb. Took the carb to my local Tru Value Hardware and they put a kit in the carb. Still won't run. I think it is now an adjustment issue with the H and L screws. I don't know where they are supposed to be set.

  • Tom Greminger Mar 25, 2009

Steve Lima, thank you for your continuing help on my Craftsman weedwacker. I haven't had time to adjust the H & L screws yet, but I did notice that when I push on the primer bulb it does not fill with fuel and there are air bubbles in the fuel lines. Doesn't seem right to me.
    Thanks,
    Tom Greminger

mine won't run either; the primer bulb doesn't fill up. there's only one line inside the tank; is there supposed to be two?

most of the very small gas engine tools use mixed fuel.most of them have a filter in the fuel tank attached to the fuel line.people being people don't always mix the gas and oil in the gas can as they should to blend properly, but sometimes pour gas directly into the small engine fuel tank then pour in a bit of oil (usually extra).the filters are located in the lowest part of the fuel tank right where pure oil sinks to and over time become like tar.Primer bulbs can 't pull this through.Won t burn either.Old fuel lines are also a common problem with the small engines as they crack or plug up-small diameter. Solution : Clean out the fuel tank, replace fuel line and filter and they will start.Good luck and please let me know.

Sand in the carb will cause a motor to start then die too. It can be very hard sometimes to diagnose because sometimes air wont blow it out -Sand is like glass very very hard to see and stays stuck -you just need to soak it in gas then blow it out after a day or two.

When the Craftsman Weedwacker starts in idle and then stalls and the primer bulb will not fill with gasoline or will not pop back after being pushed in, then you have a blockage within the carburetor. The bulb is intended to **** fuel into the supply line, to prime it. To solve the problem, remove the carburetor, open the side that has ONE screw holding it (not the side with four small screws), remove all the two lines remembering how they were attached (the feeder line from the fuel tank attaches to the straight copper tube and the tube going to the bulb intake side attaches to the bent copper tube) and blow out the material blocking the fuel flow inside the carburetor. Then after replacing the carburetor, press the bulb and it should **** and discharge fuel easly. I have had two of these and the fuel path within the carburetor clogs easly. Jim Hart

Craftsman weed eaters are well know for there fuel line to dry rot.the filter falls off and the carb fills up with the fuel line.there is a small filter inside the carb that needs to be cleaned out.replace the fuel lines and take the the carb apart and carefully blow the filter out.don't loose the screen that's inside the carb.very easy to do.once it's clean reinstall the carb and it should prime just like it's use to.make sure the filter is back on inside the fuel tank....let me know if this helped you

hopefully they cleaned the carb. before they rebuilt it.the settings for the low side and hi side are the same..... 1 turn out form bottem.hi side does not go in from that point no less then 7/8 of a turn out from bottem.any more in then that and it's running to lean at full throttle and will burn the motor up.let me know if you need more help.............

nope, the air bubbles should go away when priming. the primer does not pressurize the fuel tank.it only takes the air from fuel line and carb.when you changed the fuel line did you make sure that it was the same size as the old one....also did you reuse the plastic tubing adaptor though the tank.if the fuel line was bigger it will narrow too much going through the tank shutting off the fuel flow o the carb.....the plastic hose adaptor will collect dirt and old fuel line.....the narrowing of the hose will do the same thing.....check both......also check the fuel inlet of the carb and make sure there isn't anything there, let me know .

I have a similar problem..

I can get it started with no problem. however once the throttle is applied it sounds like it is choking.. as if it is to much of something. I am wondering if the secondary circuit is at fault here. i dont have the tool to turn the jets so I am stuck. (when I get em out I am grinding a **** into the tops so I can turn with regular SD.

Upon spraying some carb cleaner or starter fluid at the throttle shaft (top) it seems that it causes the carb to stumble i am wondering if it is allowing air in there and messing up the mixture.

I ran it for probably 2 hours cycling the throttle and injecting Seafoam into it with fresh gas (and seaFoam in that) it cleared up the idle but once out of 50 times I can get it to start reving up a tad. otherwise its stuck at close to idle.

I cleaned the carb all except the jets (I cant get em out).

I will have to check the Cyl head also and see if perhaps its loose.

Loose head. I have found that the head on the Craftsman weedwackers have a tendency to loosen that will allow it to start for a moment then stop. It sucks air. The last 2 that I have bought I have to tighten the head after every 8 to 10 hours of use.
I've had the same problem with my Craftsman blower.

I just replaced the fuel lines from the tank to the carb, I got universal lines from lowes and had to drill one of the holes in the tank slightly bigger. Careful! make sure the diameter of the new hole is slightly smaller than the new fuel line so it wont leak. Works like a charm.

Small blockage on the carb will cause this. I've had sand in the carb and its not easy to get out sometimes. The motor will start then die.

If the primer bulb won't pop out, the chances are that the check valve in the bulb may be gummed up and sticking, preventing gas from flowing into the bulb. This can happen if fuel is left in the trimmer over winter.

Check out this guide I've written which covers typical problems which prevent trimmers from starting and running. It also shows you how a carburetor works and how to disassemble it and clean it

I've also discovered that one of the reason trimmers will not "rev up" is because of blockage in the "muffler" is clogged with shuet caused by incorrect fuel mixture. Mostly to much oil.

The weedwacker dies when I squeeze the throttle trigger

You need to clean the carburetor. Remove and disassemble carb. Use a den Tek Brush, (used to clean between teeth), to clean the small portals in carb. Use a carb. cleaner while cleaning. Make sure the small screen in carb. is free of debris. The smallest of paticles can cause the carb. not to run right. Reassemble the carb. and try starting. If there is no change, then you will need to buy a carb. kit for your trimmer. Replace all appropriateparts: gaskets, diaphragm, needle valve, and the small screen.
