My Whirlpool side by side ice maker is making ice way too slow. It was really fast before. Iv'e had it for 2 years now. The water is filling fast enough and the temp is low enough, but it is very slow through the cycle to dump and refill with water. Is there anyway to adjust the speed of the cycle?

Catriver, Thanks for the help. I don't have an Ohm meter, but after removing the cover over the wheel I noticed that one of the plastic clips holding the wheel on was broken off. When the IM started to cycle and toss the ice into the bucket (I guess I looked at the right time) I could see that the wheel was struggling to move without that one clip. I put a small piece of plastic from a pen cap in the space where the clip broke off to try and give it more leverage. It's cheesy I know, but lets see if it helps. If not then what do I do? Change the module? At least now I know how the whole thing functions. Thanks again.Catriver,

Bayfishr, I'll try to give you an idea on how this thing works and let you do some checks. The cycle is controlled by temp. The harvesting process begins when the IM thermostat closes signaling the harvest temp has been reached. The closed thermostat supplies power to the IM motor and heater. Therefore the colder you keep it, the faster the production unless something has failed. I see a lot of heaters fail. You can test this. When the IM starts it cycle, test the voltage from L to H on the module,they will be marked. Should read 120V. The heater on the bottom of the mold should be getting hot. Disconnect the harnes and ohm it. Should ohm out at approx 72 ohms, same test points. If this checks good, check the center wheel on the module itself. Two clips keep the wheel in place. If one is cracked off, the IM will not fucntion properly. Other than colder temps, there is no way to adjust the speed of the cycle. Keep the flap in front of the ice-maker down so that the cold air is drawn across that IM. Catriver.
bayfishr, sounds like you need to change the module. Very easy, 3 screws and it seperates from the mold. The module comes as one piece, no individual replacement parts. If the heater om the mold was bad it would not harvest ice it would be stuck in the mold. You say it is making ice and the freezer is keeping everthing frozen so the best thing to do is replace the icemaker as a whole unit, ot just the head. you can get it on line or at any appliance parts store. there very simple to replae. god luck

Whirlpool Ice Makers are about the hardest working part on your refrigerator and their average life is about five years. You can fill the tray with tap water if the ice slots are already empty and let the water freeze. If after the water freezes and the ice drops to ice bin then the water control valve.

Pout about 2/3 cup of water into the ice maker . If it dumps but does not refill , replace the water inlet valve ( the piece the wall water line connects to behind the refrig ) . Also check the tube which fills the ice maker as it will freeze up , not letting water go into the ice maker . This is also caused by a bad water valve .
If the ice maker does not dump the water poured into it , replace the ice maker .
Also , check that the coils are clean under the front of the refrig , as this will cause slow ice production and can cause the ice maker not to dump due to too warm of temperature . Ice maker has to be 5 degrees to operate .

As a general rule refrigerator ice makers don't really make ice cubes very fast.
Things that could increase the production are.
1. Set the freezer to a colder setting. That control is usually on a whirlpool is called an air control.
2. Setting the refrigerator control colder, while also help since setting it to a colder setting will actually make both compartments colder.
3. The ice maker produces ice when it's internal thermostat reaches approx. 14 degrees.
You have no control of that function.
4. If the cubes are on the small side, the water valve on the back bottom of the machine may need to be replaced.
5. Along that same line, the water supply line from the house and it's fittings could be starting to restrict, not supplying enough water pressure.
The line, unless plastic, and the valve would need either be removed and cleaned or replaced with new.
Hi: Change or just remove the water filter first. As your water dispensing slowed that is a clue. If the water filter is that clogged it will cause a problem with the ice maker. Plus the water you drink is not filtered anymore. City water is being run through 2 years of crud. If you don't replace it just remove it. I hope this helps, Jeff
sorry to hear that i hope i still can help check the fill tube that fills your ice maker see if it is frozen if it defroated with a hair dryer if there is no frost then you might have a bad water valve you see there are 2 selenoids on valve one for dispenser and the other one for the ice maker so if you don't get water it could be the valve look at the ice maker are the forks pointing up or down if they are down then you have a bad module on ice maker that is the front part of it. if they are pointing to 1oclock then check valve and tube

My icemaker is filling completely. Dumps completely. Freezer temp is 0. But it take forever for it to freeze.
