Ethernet port not reading my modem for my dell inspiron 8600

Are you talking about direct-connecting via Ethernet to a cable or DSL modem? You shouldn't have to disable wireless to do that. If the cable modem has an open Ethernet port, you should be able to run a straight-thru Ethernet Cat-5 cable between that port and the Ethernet port on your laptop. The laptop should recognize that it is connected to the modem through the direct connection. Check the manual for the cable modem or information supplied by your ISP for connection details. You may have to do some setup on the modem to get an Internet connection, like having your ISP 'activate' the modem. Just be sure your Ethernet cable is a straight-thru, standard Ethernet cable, and not a 'cross-over' cable such as is used to transfer data between two computers.

try connecting through an ethernet cable. see what happens. Install the appropriate modem driver and network driver from support site.

Your ethernet card is not working and it seems to be damaged so if your laptop in under warranty so replace it free from the service center. Otherwise they will take charges for this replacement.

Are you sure it's a modem port and not a ethernet port. They look very similar and people confuse them easily. The ethernet port is slightly larger though. So we can verify we're talking about the correct thing, are you using dialup to connect to the internet? or are you connecting to a broadband router or dsl modem?
in either case you should be able to get drivers on dell's website and copy them over to your laptop.

Go to the dell site and check the support options for your computer. There should be a driver download section, and in there you shoud find the correct network driver. In theory, it's as simple as that to sort integrated component driver issues.

First, power down all equipment.
Second, plug in power to modem, let all the lights come on and boot up
Third, plug in the router power and let that boot up and the lights come on
Fourth, Plug in each pc to the ports labeled 1-4
The WAN port should be connected to the Modem also.

if not enable it.

Is that an external usb nic card? you can just directly connect it to the usb port.

Did you plug the modem into the internet port? The modem give the router its internet, the router distributes the internet from there.
