Hard drive diagnostics return code 4

After a problem with my computer, a Dell Dimensio 9200, I got a error on one of my 2 harddisks. I did run Harddrive Diagnostics and this was the result: Drive 0 WDC WD2500JS-75NCB3 Fail. Return code: 4 Drive 1 WDC WD2500JS-75NCB3 Pass My computer is very slow since that problem. I can reach my data and already made a backup from all my data. Does anybody know what the problem is? And how I can solve this? pmglukassen @ hotmail.com

It sounds like you've had a fatal error - you can reboot the PC back to factory setting - this is called a hard reset - but before you do that - unplug you tower and clean it out (dust & dirt) - once you're done with that - restart you computer and press &hold down the "Ctrl" and "F11" button at the same time - this will let you reset the PC to the original factory configuration.

Your hard drive may be dead, the partition/boot sector is damaged or the motherboard seiral ata chip is bad. If it is one of the first two you will need to delete the partition, re-create the partition and format the drive. Take the drive out and install it in another computer as a slave and see if the drive is recognized and files are all there. If it works in the other computer try backing up the drive and then re-install it in the problem computer and try to format and re-install the system either using the installation discs that came with the computer. If the system utility to restore the computer is located on the drive you might have an issue. You can try using that utility if you have it and it may or may not work.

Unmountable Boot Volumes almost always indicate a failure of the hard drive. You can try running CHKDSK /R from recovery console or a clean installation of Windows. If those fail, replace the hard drive.

Please see the Service manual for instructions on how to remove and replace the Hard Drive. Be sure to remove and reinstall the cables for the hard drive if you are on a Desktop Computer.
After reinstalling the hard drive re-run the diagnostics if you receive the same error code Contact Us.
Run the Drive Self Test (DST) from the Utility Partition also known as the 32 bit diagnostics to determine if the previous error has been corrected. If the DST from the Utility Partition does not indicate a failure of the drive, we consider the error to have been corrected and the drive does not need to be replaced.

Computer boots up but then goes into a black screen I have run a Dignostic on it and I get an DST Short Test Error Code 100-0146. This is a Dell Latitude D600. Thanks In Advance

This error indicates that your hard disk drive or the circuitry that controls the hard drive is defective.
Either your hard drive is defective or the motherboard.
Try running diagnostics form a CD on your computer. You should have a CD that came with thecomputer that has "Diagnostics and Utilities" listed under contents.Boot form this CD and run the extended diagnostics.
If you don't have the CD you can go to www.support.dell.com andselect "Drivers and Downloads". Enter the "service tag" (serialnumber) of the computer. You can then download "Diagnostics" .
To boot from a CD disk, power on your computer and tap the key tobring you to the "One time boot menu". Insert the CD into the top CD/DVD driveand then select "Boot from CD/DVD" and hit key. Select the"Run the 32 Bit Dell Diagnostics.

If you are able to run the Diagnostics then your hard drive is probably defective.

I have Dell inspiron 1525 window vista recovery reports 5 error are detected in hard drive and memory errors detected on my laptop 1. hard drive doesnt respond to system commands-critical error 2.boot...

your HDD may be corrupted, re-installing windows vista is one option. Your best bet is if you have/ can obtain a copy of windows vista run setup and try the repair wizard in the windows vista setup, the wizard automatically finds errors and missing files and replaces them therefore solving any errors in your HDD. you can also try to use the recovery wizard from your recovery disc. best of luck

Computer will not boot up, "internal hard disk not found"

Hi, first thing to do is not panic!. Have you tried switching the machine off for five minutes and then turning it back on? If you still have a problem, power the machine off, open up the underneath panel which holds the hard drive (see your manual for which panel or look for one appx 8cm by 4cm. there will probably be one screw which you have to remove. to remove the hard drive once the screw is removed, pull the plastic band along the axis of the hard drive until it unplugs from the connector. Then reverse the proceedure! This will reconnect the hard drive and clean the connector terminals symultaneously. When the laptop is back together, try powering up again. If this doesn't work, contact me again. Kind regards

My Dell inspiron 1501 went to a blue screen and gives me an error message when reading the Hard Drive upon boot up. I am told the disk is either malfuntioning on logic or may have crashed. How can I find...

fortunately dell has built in diagnostics that can assist you with identifying the problem. here is a link on how to run them. if the drive is bad then you would need to replace it and reinstall windows and drivers. if it is good then run memory diagnostics as well just to be safe. if both pass then you may have to do a destructive reinstall of windows because you most likely have a virus issue. copy and paste this link into your browser it will help you run the diagnostics.

The hard drive has failed. If you're in warranty, contact Dell for a warranty replacement of the drive - it's a customer-replaceable part.
If you're out of warranty, look on ebay for a good deal on a brand new hard drive for your Dell Inspiron 1525

Computer will reboot on Virus/Spyware scan at random. I have: 1. Installed clean XP SP2 parallel system and booted that one. Same problem. 2. Memory Test at boot time is OK. 3. Air circulation from Power...

The weak airflow from the power supply unit (PSU) is suspect. Virus / Malware scanning is a disk and processor intensive operation - resulting in greater load on both. Increased load translates to heat. Check to be sure that the processor (CPU) fan is running, too. An overheating PSU and CPU can cause all types of problems.

Are you using a genuine XP install disk/image or a disk of questionable origin? Use of bogus OS disks is "asking for trouble".

If your system BIOS or set up (accessed during boot) allows, try to located the page that displays component temperatures and fan speeds. Check this immediately after rebooting from a an unplanned shut down - if unable to locate this set up page, download HWMonitor at:

http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php

It is a free program - choose the 32 or 64 bit version. Note fan RPM and CPU core temps to help determine where heat is coming from - or which fans aren't operating correctly.

My OS freeze's as soon as i input my password

Hi there.
Sorry but i have to inform you that your hard drive is failing, the error messages that you are getting relate to this fact and is related to the hard drive having unrecoverable bad sectors or immanent hard drive failure.
There is no way you can recover the drive!!
Your only option now would be to buy a new drive for the computer or if the machine is still under warranty take advantage of that and send it in for repair, you will no doubt have to purchase a windows installation disk too.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!
