You can install another DVD player software.
there are plenty of free players on the internet that you can download, or you can buy one at your local software dealer. Once you install this, the newer video codecs should be installed

unistall the driver from device manager restart your computer let windows assign you one and
go to this microsoft website and double click the FIX IT tool http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
I know this probably doesn't qualify as a 'solution', but try using VLC to play your DVDs instead of Media Player. From what I understand, Media Player has a whole host of issues with DVD playback.
1. Completely remove any dvd/cd player/burner softwares (i.e. Nero, Power DVD, etc.).
2. Go to device manager and remove your DVD/CD device from the device list
3. Restart you laptop
4. Windows will then try to reinstall the device drivers again for the DVD drive.
5. After another restart, then reinstall your dvd softwares again.
go to device manager and scan for new hardware changes or try to update the drivers for the device.. if it doesnt work try to reinstall the power dvd 6 or update it with a new version...btw poer dvd 8 are available now
I recently got my computer fixed and in order to fix it they had to clear everything off my computer so it was like a new one when i got it back but now it wont play my dvds
