My electric dryer starts then shuts down after 5 seconds

Centrifugal start switch, built into motor, may not be releasing when motor comes up to speed. A little light oil on sliding part of switch might help.

Last night my wife was using the washer and when the washer went into the spin cycle it sounded like the washer was chugging. The drum was turning but not at full capability. the washer is a Kenmore...

I had a Kenmore washer that had a somewhat similar problem. It had a rubber sprocket that had started to deteriorate that caused my drum to stop spinning. I'm not sure if your is the same but you might try pulling the back panel and see how the drum is driven. I am guessing the sprocket or belt has started to wear out.

Shuts off before clothes are dry, will restart and shut off again

Most likely, the operating thermostat has failed. When the dryer heats up, it gets too hot and the high limit thermostat turns the machine off. After it cools down, it will start again.

Unplug the machine! Check the thermostats for continuity with a multimeter. All thermostats should have continuity at room temperature.

Dryer stops mid cycle-restarts when cooled down--is it some sensor?

Good day,
Yes it's a sensor, but if you have to restart it manually after the cool down period, it is the sensor built into the motor.
That sensor measures motor temperature and current draw. It locks out the motor until it reaches normal temperature.

If it restarts on it's own, then post back with the complete model number. It would be a different problem.

Dryer won't start until it cools down

motor bearings are going out. What happens is in the motor there is a thermal overload switch. This switch activates when the motor gets too hot to prevent fires. That is why you always see the "thermally protected" sticker on the electric motors. If the bearing are going bad or possibly windings in the motor the switch kicks in and will not restart until the temp. of the motor cools to a certain level. Take the model and serial # to an appliance parts supply for replacement of the motor.

Hope this has helped you

My Kenmore Elite dryer spins with no heat

please check the thermal cutoff. these are the parts with 2 thick wires attached to it. they are normally located near the heating element ( if electrical ) and (near the exhaust if it is gas).

these parts control the heating element.

tnx 4 using fixya,
