There is a trip lever along the garage door track.
When door goes up, it trips the lever and turns off the opener.
The trip lever is adjustable. Loosen it and move back 1" or so.
If that is not far enough, move it back 1/2" more.

Door will not work open or close

Dave, Ensure nothing is blocking the safety lights and if they are on align them. If you know there is power to the unit, logic/circuit board is probably bad and needs replaced. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

Overhead door opener 555 with manual release won't lockup chain

Sometimes if the clip is not reset then it wont catch the chain mechanism again to open or close the door. If you havent already reset the pull cord clip then that would be my guess. Try closing the garage door reset the clip with the rope attached, push it up til it clicks. and hit the garage door opener button. the rope and clip should move along the track until it hits the arm bracket where the garage door attaches to the chain mechanism.

If that does not do the trick then the clip has some screws on either side of the plastic casing and may need to be loosened and readjusted to match up with the garage door arm bracket and then locked back into place. That should do the trick if all esle fails, you may have to call the door company to come and correct the problem. Hope it works out!

Replaced a garage door opener (motor only) will only go downward a foot then back to the up position...tried the force button and the spring adjustment. why wont it work

Try this.

Loosen the chain enough so that you can remove it from the sprocket above the motor unit. With the door closed run the motor until the sprocket turns clockwise and stops. With everything attached replace and tighten the chain. Some adjusting of the up and down limits will probably be required.

My garage door will only open a little over 5 feet

Close the door and release the GDO from the door by pulling the release handle. Operate the machine without the door attached. Does the trolley go to the full open position?? If so check the door.
Operate the door manually. If it is very heavy and wants to close the door is out of balance.
If the door doesn't work correctly, the GDO will not work. Regardless of the type of door, it should be easy to open manually. Unballanced doors are dangerous. The counterbalance springs may be broken or just require adjusting. The door jamming or hitting an obstruction is another thing to consider. If the door hits an object going up, it will stop, going down it should reverse.
If the door is good, and the machine runs full cycle without the door attached, reattach the door and adjust the "Up Force" adjustment on the end of the machine with the wiring. With proper operating equipment (door, GDO), it should be no more than 6 O'clock. Any higher than that, and the door likely requires servicing.

The light on my craftsman garage door opener won't turn on

Probably not the socket. The light is most is controlled by a relay, and that is controlled by a few semiconductors and other components. If all else is working OK, you can choose to ignore it or remove the electronics for repair; after cutting AC power to it. A somewhat competent tech can probably repair that with little on parts cost, even if the relay has failed; the type probably used isn't a big ticket item. A very competent tech won't spend much time finding the failed parts.

The garage door goes up, but will not go down. i push the opener

Make sure the door sensors are aligned properly. They must be pointed at one another and the small light on each one should be lit and not flickering.

Door opens and then closes wright away

I figured out that when I replaced the gears, I damaged the RPM sensor. It was easy to swap out the old for the new and now it works fine.

Liftmaster security + model 1265 NOT CLOSING PROPERLY

wbuero, I had same problem two weeks. The door springs weaken over time and may need to be tightened - check opening force manually. Manufacturer also recommended reviewing install guide to be sure opener arm is attached at proper angle. The opener on my professionally installed door was not connected properly. It that doesn't work, the opener drive train or door track/wheels may need maintenence.
