Check your door springs to make sure you don't have a broken spring. Remove the cover from the opener motor unit and check the drive gear. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor. It will be obvious if this is going bad. On the rear of the motor unit you will find the 'up force' control. Increase this just a bit. This will compensate for door springs getting tired.
If the GDO will only open the door, it could still be the door sensors. They may be slightly out of alignment, or there may be some spiderwebs or debris blocking the sensors. Readjust them by eye. An easy way to tell for sure is to close the door, if it does not move or goes part way and reopens (caused by the sensors) the light on the GDO will flash 5 times to let you know the sensors have been activated. On the older machines, there used to be a plug where the wire connected to the sensor. They would corrode due to dampness/moisture. If it is the older style with the plug, replace the sensors. Also, if the sensors are to blame for your problem. pushing and holding the wall button will close the door fully. Good luck.
It sounds like the door is traveling too far in the down direction. When it hits the floor the safety causes it to reverse to the open position. You need to adjust the 'down limit' not the force.
On the side of your opener you will find the down limit control. Using a small screwdriver turn this control in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. May take some tweaking to get it just right.
First adjust the down limit setting. There is two white screws on the side of the opener. The one that says down needs to be turned to the less side. One full revolution of screw adjusts approx. two inches. Turn it down until the door does not close all of the way and the slightly turn it up until the door closes all of the way with stight pressure on the door. Next there are two blue screws on the back of the opener. they should be on the five setting on both the up and down screws.
