Periodically cycles through a loud humming noise.

Cooler runs quiet 95% of the time but every few days it sounds like the motor shifts to another level and will make a loud humming noise for 5-10 minutes. It abruptly starts and then abruptly quits but is so loud it can startle you.

We are experiencing the same symptoms with our LG (2 year old)french door bottom freezer. It began with a dropping sound and a loud bang, then an incredibly loud humming or whirring sound. It quiets down a bit but the humming always seems to be present. From reading posts it may be ice build-up around the fan. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi, these are the early signs of compressor failure. i would put in a service call before it completely fails.

  • Anonymous Mar 09, 2009

I would focus on the actual motor as the focal point for repair.

Loud humming noise

Happens when the bearings in the fan or compressor motor are getting worn out. make sure there isn't a piece of cardboard cowling or debris hitting the fan.

Newer dishwasher and actuaslly says in manual do not be alarmed if you cannot hear dishwasher as it is very quiet. Well mine is the exact opposite. It is so loud. Sounds like the motor is in overload....

I would suspect there is something stuck in either your wash motor or drain pump. If the noise happens throughout the whole cycle, it's likely the wash motor, but if it only happens on start up and periodically thoughtout the cycle, it's the drain pump. The drain pumps are known however to get noiser after a few months, in which case I would have the drain pump replaced.

Buzzing Sound at Base of Unit does not go away

If everything is working as it should - the problem may be with the motor.
Either the starter is starting to fail, or it may have gotten wet. Check for leaks around the base, and be prepared to eventually replace the motor.
If you can deal with the humming, there is no reason to replace it at this time, and there is nothing you can do to quiet the noise.

Gas dryer makes loud hum

Sounds like you may have a motor issue, they can get lint trapped inside, and it causes the motor to overheat, and eventually go out. You can remove the top, then the front, and see if thats the problem. Usually, once the motor starts making noise, its time to replace. Right now, the packings in the motor are cold, and once they heat up, they stop making noise, so it could last quite a while.

How deep do you want to get into this?It sounds like the wash pump motor bearings that are worn. You can pull the unit out flip it over and wd40 the bearings in the motor or you can replace the bearings.Try to lube them first.
