I don't think there IS an adjustment. That is what prompted me to construct a tensioner device to add just that little more tension needed. This was MY fix after trying a new belt and spring.
My Craftsman mower lost the self propel feature. The small pulley on the top of the transmission would slip under load, There was just not enough tension on the belt to over come it. Tried a new belt and also replaced the tensioner spring...still slipping when going uphill or with full bag. Possible pulleys worn...not wanting to gamble more time and labor, I bought a 4" 1/4" cap screw with extra nuts and flat washers, a 3"16 eye bolt as well. Drill a 1/4" hole in the bracket that holds the trans activation cable in place and a 3/16" hole in the mower deck so the holes are in alignment with each other. Put the cap screw through the 1/4" hole with the threads facing toward the front of the mower. Fasten the eye bolt into the 3/16" hole in the mower deck locking it in place with one nut on each side of the metal. Now you have the 1/4" bole protruding through the eye bolt. Using a flat washer and nut, tighten then nut easily and when there is room put a second nut on it. When you have tightened it up to the desired belt tension lock the two nuts together using two wrenches. Note...do NOT make the belt incredibly tight or you will destroy the trans in a short time. Go a little at a time till the drive does not slip under load. Good luck hope this helps. Oh....you will have to trim the plastic cover that covers the transmission so the added bolt will clear it and you can put the cover back in it's proper place.

SOURCE: Toro 6.5 self propelled Mower - Self Propell won't engage

see if the lever going to the gearbox is cracked or broken. there is a gear inside the box that has a pin going thru the shaft that may have broken but usually it is external. these mowers have a plastic lever to put the transmission lever in gear if the cable is overtightened they wont hold up.if it cracks it leaves practially no tension on the engagment system

SOURCE: Honda Harmony self propelled not propelling. Belt

Do you know for sure that the belt is not stretched. Make sure also that it is on the pulley correctly and the pulley is spinning with the shaft you also might have spun a key.

I have a self propelled lawn mower and the the belt that propells the wheels is loose, do I need to replace it or is there a way to tighten the tension.

Cathy, there is a way to adjust belt tension on some models whether it is by the cable or a slotted bracket where the idler wheel is mounted, depends on make and model. If you have your manual check in it for belt adjustment. Could be stretched belt, stretched cable, worn/oil on pulley, seized tensioner, stretched/broken spring on tensioner, etc.

Selfpropelled portion stopped working, replaced broken belt, have correct p/n for new belt, belt is slack ,self propelled not working

There should be 3 pulleys one on the motor on top of the blade, one on the axle for the wheels and one that goes to your cable to engage that pully and tighten the belt, take the cover off that hides the axle and pull your handle for the self propell and see if its tighting, some mowers have a little adjuster to tighten the cable on the self propell handle or even on the cable itself, did you make sure to run the belt between the guides over the blade, let me know what you find so we can further help

Not self propelling

It is probably a belt drive. Remove cover over the belt from the top and check if there is an accumulation of dirt and grass keeping it from working. Cover usually has a couple of screws holding it inplace. If that is not the problem, it mayjust need to be adjusted. Mine has a thumb wheel where the cable hooks up to the activation lever, just turn wheel to get more tension on the belt. If that doesn't work or there isn't an adjustment (there should be) then the belt needs to be replaced. Those belts stretch quickly and wear out regularly.

I have a troy built 21" rear wheel drive push mower. My problem is that it will not drive its self. I pick up the back end and the wheels take off no problem. But when I put it on the ground it does...

The self propel cable needs to be adjusted. Some of these units have an adjustment built into it. You should look in your Instruction manual. Also it could be that the belt has some wear and is slipping. The easiest thing would be to take it to a repair shop and ask them if they could adjust it for you and maybe check the belt. Hope this helps.

Front wheels lock up when pull mower backwards

Typically self-propelled mowers are propelled using the front wheels, which only turn forward. Pulling the mower back while the front wheels are turning will damage the drive gears. It's best to raise the front wheels slightly off the ground before pulling back.
