I have recently purchased a WD mybook essentials which I have been told I will be able to attach to a netgear D6300 wireless router using my macbook pro. I was wanting to be able to wirelessly transfer/access files between my Mac and the external hard drive without having to connect a cable. I am having issues doing this - I have tried going to GO, Connect to Server and connecting to smb://readyshare, however this comes up with an error message: The Server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. I guess my questions are: is it even possible to connect and transfer my files from my mac wirelessly using the WD mybook essential with the net gear D6300 or do I need another type of portable hard drive? Also, are there any ways to troubleshoot the error message related to connecting the readyshare? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks heaps!

Hi,
don't panic your hard drive might still be working . you say it dose not sign showing it's on. please have any cable that connect the hard disk to the computer checked. I think your cables might be bad.
thanks

the problem is that your western digital operates using the NTFS (New Technology File System) which is the standard file system of Windows. Apple macs is not interopable with native NTFS therefore you need to install a read-write NTFS file-system driver on your mac.
an excellent free mac NTFS driver can be found here-

download and install the software then restart your mac.

this will not work by it self you will either need to buy a computer with media software that will support your hard drive or a DVR that will support you hard drive.
the hard drive connected to the device you have tried to connect to are not smart devices they will not support a stand alone external drive even though there is a usb port.

I would suspect that either the USB cable or port is the problem. Change the USB port (On the Mac or on the WD MyBook (I don't know if it has more than one USB port) that the cable is connected to and see if that improves the situation, if it still happens change the USB cable. Hope this helps.
