Leviton fan timer doesnt work

I just installed a leviton decora exhaust fan timer. The original switch was installed by an electrician, worked but after 2 years of usage started to make a buzzing sound and eventually stopped working. So i`m trying to replace it with the same switch. Everything is connected as the electrician did but the fan doesn't work. However, the little green LED next to each button and at the bottom light up when i click on a setting.

Leviton countdown timer model number is unknown.
Which timer has green lights? I thought the leds were red.
Add comment with wire colors on timer and fuller description of timer, and what the timer does.

SOURCE: Cannot get the decora 4

Decora 3-way and 4-way switches do not wire differently than toggle-type switches.
Instructions below are tedious but will accurately guide you to solution.

Let's break down the problem starting with 3-ways.

1) Start with 3-way switches:
Old 3-way switch has 2 brass screws and 1 dark screw
New decora has same color screws.
Wire that went to dark screw on old device must attach to dark screw on decora device.
Other two wires can attach to either brass screw.
Wires that attach to brass screws are travelers ... these wires travel to the 4-way switch.
So there are 2 traveler wires at each 3-way switch.

2) Let's test if 3-way switches are wired correctly by taking 4-way switch out of equation.
We will resolve problem with 4-way switch after 3-ways are correct.

There are 4 wires at the 4-way switch.
These are the 2 traveler wires that arrive from each 3-way switch.

At the 4-way switch, 2 wires arrive in one cable, and 2 wires arrive from another cable.
To say it differently, there are 2 wires from cable1 and 2 wires from cable2.
Connect 1 wire from cable1 to 1 wire from cable2 with a wire nut
Now connect the 2nd wire from cable1 to 2nd wire from cable2 with another wire nut.
So now the traveler wires are connected, and the 4 way switch is out of equation.
Turn on power, and click 3-way switches to see if both switches turn lights on-off in all positions.

Do your 3-way switches work correctly?

3) If 3-ways are not correct, then you have wrong wire connected to dark screw.
First thing to check is if you can identify traveler wire colors by looking at wires at 4-way switch.
Remember, traveler wires at 4-way switch go back to 3-way switch and connect to brass screws on 3-way switch.

4) If you cannot tell traveler wires by looking at 4-way switch, then you can try different combinations until both 3-way switches work.
Or you can test: disconnect wires from one of the 3-way switches. Separate 3 wires for testing. Move other 3-way switch to down position. Turn on power. Test each wire to bare ground wire. Mark wire that lights up. Now move other 3-way to up position. Test each wire to bare ground wire. If same wire lights up each test, then that wire goes to dark screw. If different wire lights up, then mark that wire. The two marked wires are travelers, and they connect to brass screws. Other wire connects to dark screw. Repeat identical test for other 3-way switch.

At this point your 3-way switches will work, if light bubs are not burned out.

5) Last step, the 4 way switch.
Remember from step above, that 2 wires arrive in cable1: These 2 wires connect on one side of 4-way switch. The other 2 wires that arrive in cable2 connect of other side of 4-way switch.

I have a Woods Decora time we use on our bathroom vent fan. It is preset for 5-10-15-30 minutes. It now runs for 5-10-15-30 SECONDS! How can I fix it?

There are no repairs for electronic wall timers.
Timers have 1 year warranty against defects in workmanship. This sounds like the case here.

Try timer on different circuit and see if same malfunction appears.

Woods is rated for 1/4 HP and will handle bath fan, so load does not sound like a problem.
Timer worked before, so wiring is correct.
Power outages can knock out timers when the power turns on again and timer is exposed to surge.

View countdown timers:
Electronic Leviton 6200 series and Leviton LTB series are more robust than Woods.
Mechanical rotary-type timers have no electronics, and last many years without problems.
Buy locally: GE countdown timers are sold at Home Depot. Advantage of store-bought timer is hassle-free warranty: buy new timer and return defect timer in new package.

My whole house fan has been having problems. The motor gets very hot and turns off. After cooling, it can work again (though I am not keeping it on!) The whole house fan is a Sears fan. The original...

Ada, I think you have already diagnosed the problem. It's the Leviton timer. For whatever reason, it can not handle the fan motor without over heating. The best indicator, was the melted hot wire. Perhaps the switch was defective from the start. I suspect the timer was rated for a ceiling fan and not a whole house fan.

Hope this helps you and thanks for choosing FixYa.

Leviton 6651 Decora Programmable Electronic Timer. When turned on all lights flicker. checked all connections and all are fine. Also replaced with regular switch and lights work fine.

There are a lot of problems that can affect timer operation.
Call 1-800-824-3005

We can start guessing at causes, and then you try some things, and add a comment with what you've done so the possibilities are narrowed down.
This could be a wiring problem, timer problem, load capacity problems, circuit problem, possibly a noise interference problem.
I would check load requirements and wiring first.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Leviton-timers.html

1) Load:
Manual says: DO NOT INSTALL TO CONTROL A RECEPTACLE, FLOURESCENT LIGHTING, A MOTOR, OR A TRANSFORMER OPERATED APPLIANCE.
Some recessed lighting can have transformers.

Try timer in another room on a different load.

2) For single-pole operation, the black and blue wires are used, and yellow wire is capped off.

Try reversing blue and black wires.
Make sure yellow wire is capped off.

3) For 3-way operation, the timer replace one of the 3-way switches.
The other 3-way switch remains in the circuit, but wiring has to be changed on the remaining 3-way.

I have the unit wired and it does not wotk.I have black to black, red to red green to ground and white to white, any thoughts? Thank you

Electrician test wiring before connecting anything.
First of all, you don't mention what type of switch was replaced.

1) Leviton 6230 countdown timer is made to replace single-pole light switch only.
Single pole is where 1 switch controls the Load (light fan motor)

Your wiring sounds like 3-way switch.
3-way is where 2 switches control same Load.
For example a hallway usually has 3-way switches.

To confirm. If old switch has 1 dark screw, 2 brass screws, and 1 green screw, then that is 3-way switch. Use Leviton LTB15, LTB30, LTB60, LTB02, LTB12 countdown timer for 3-way.
Smarthome sells product and shows .pdf manual
http://www.smarthome.com/4255/Leviton-LTB60-1LZ-4-Button-10-20-30-60-Minute-Countdown-Timer-Switch/p.aspx

2) If old switch has 2 brass screws and 1 green screw then that is single-pole switch.

3) If you are replacing single-pole switch, here are testing & wiring instructions for Leviton timer.
Remove device and separate wires for testing.
Use ordinary two wire tester.
Tape tester leads to wood sticks so hands are away from power.
Do not untwist wires that were twisted together before you started.
Turn on power.
Test each wire to bare ground wire.
Tester lights up on Hot wire. This wire will connect to timer black wire.
Now you know Hot wire.
Test Hot wire to each of the other wires, excluding bare ground wire.
Tester lights up on neutral. Timer white wire connects to Neutral wire.
If box does not contain Neutral wire, then timer white wire connects to bare ground.

Timer green wire connects to bare ground wire.
Timer red wire connects to wire going to Load.

If I want the TIMER 6230M to stay in ON position for longer than 30 minutes, how can I make it works like a toggle ON/OFF switch?

The Leviton 6230 is a countdown timer with maximum time of 30 minutes.
The other times are 15minutes, 5minutes and 3minutes.
The timer has a manual override.
Push the bottom button and the timer works like a switch.

Leviton also make the 6260 countdown ... with 10-20-30-60minute times.
