If your archos 605 is in recovery mode I beleave the firmware(software) would need to be reloaded.
Here is the firmware for the 4GB version of the device, the page has instructions on how to load the firmware. Click on "how to install firmware" for step by step instructions.

Download the latest firmware for Archos 605 WiFi to your PC. Connect your 605 to PC and copy the film across and unplug 605 from PC.
I take it you have tried to update it and this happened. It has happened to others too, they redownloaded and tried again and it worked. Hope this helps, if it does then reply here please.
They just decided to cancel the TV guide service.. one that I BOUGHT the 605 because of... I have started to try to gather names of people who bought the ARCHOS partially because of the TV Guide feature.... The customer service is non existent with this company.... go to Facebook and search Archos Doesnt care.... If we can get enough people together perhaps we can force a change...
I fixed my son's 605 4 GB had Recovery code (104) on it These are the steps i followed
* Use the computer for this process that you always used for this archos
* Download the firware Upgrade 2.1
* Plug the Archos to Pc
* When the white screen comes up do format
* Wait until all done then put the firmware in to the root sector of the Archos
* Safely remove the usb for Archos from your pc first and then unplug the cable.
* Do not pick any option on the Archos screen
* Just turn it off from the power button by holding it until it turns off
* Wait about 5 minutes and plug in back to pc

it will come up with white screen again but this time it will start
Update you will see the progress bar moving wait until it is all done
and it will shut off. Turn it back on Your archos will be back to normal.
When you go to download from Archos site it will explain how to download depending upon how your device pops up on your Pc.

Remove your memory card and restart your archos, when it asks if you want to repair blahblah... just keep pressing the cross till it loads as normal with the sd card 'out', this should work, to stop it happening in the future format your memory card 'sd' with your archos once it has started. Hope that helps!
I have a similar problem. I received my Archos 605 two weeks ago and thought the product was awesome. However, I had to call customer service for the plug-ins I was supposed to receive free. I was dropped twice after waiting for 12 - 15 minutes each time. On my third call, I finally received customer service after waiting an additional 12 minutes. The woman was very nice where she finally got me 6 of the 7 the rebate specified.
Today, 09/14/09, I had to call Archos for the broken screen which was a 20 minute wait. It is NOT under warranty and will cost me $155.00 plus shipping. I paid $154.99 total for the unit brand new.
Customer service stated sorry. DO NOT PURCHASE AN ARCHOS -- BY A IPOD. I HAVE LEARNED!
