Dyson Animal DC 28 brush bar removal

Brush bar will not spin, red light flashes, brush bar seems stuck but it is hair free. Is there a way to take out the brush bar completely, I think something is caught on the inside ends of the roller but can't get to it.

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulty with your DC28's brush bar. I've attached our video which shows the correct way to remove any obstructions and reset the machine, in case this is useful to you.

The brush bar isn't designed to be removable, and attempting to remove it may void any guarantee on your machine. If you would like some further help it may be best if you contact us directly - our experts will be happy to confirm if we're able to repair your machine under the terms of our 5-year guarantee. You can reach us on 1-866-693-9766 (US), or 1-877-397-6622 (CA).

My problem was the brush bar bearings were stiff, and the bar wouldn't turn easily. I believe the machine senses the clutch is slipping, and it goes into failure mode where the lights flash and the clutch disengages. To repair, you must remove the brush roll, but it is constrained by the belt. So remove the vacuum hose to the the brush head, disconnect the surgical tubes, and remove wheels and axle. Pull the clip that holds the hook for the air diverter, then the cover over the clutch (working it around the hook). Now unplug the two wire connectors beside the clutch and set them out of your way. All this is to gain access to the clutch.
Using your finger, rotate to lead screw on the clutch motor to fully engage the clutch (The gear on the end will move towards the clutch body.) Remove the remaining screw holding the clutch down and unhook the other side. Remove the tiny sur-clip at the end of the clutch shaft (if you bend it during removal, bend it back, and much later during reassembly, push it over the tapered end of the shaft; dont try to squeeze it over the shaft groove.) and pull the white gear off the shaft. Turn the clutch over and remove the three screws, starting with the one that retains the tiny circuit board and slide it out of the way. The end of the body will come off with the motor belt and pully. Now push/pull the clutch shaft out through the brush belt, and recover the spring and pully flange that are left inside.
Now you can work on the brush roll. Remove the 7 screws holding down the roll height adjuster cover, and the roll height adjuster shaft. Work the ends of the brush roll up and down so you get an idea where the pivot points are hidden. Carefully slide a flat screwdriver blade between the clear plastic cover and the brush roll bearing housing, as close to the pivots as possible, one end of the roll at a time. Pull upwards on the brush roll with your fingers as you carefully work the screwdriver blade, and the ends of the roll will release from the cover.
With the brush roll removed, you might want to try replacing the roller bearings. But I was reluctant to try to pry the bearing housings off the ends of the roll in case they broke, since the inner race of the bearings appeared to be pressed onto the shaft. However I was able to free the bearings with light oil, and I injected new grease into the bearing using a hypodermic needle. Once the bearings turned freely, I reassembled everything (after two tries; that darned sur-clip) and everything works. My wife thinks I'm a hero.

SOURCE: Brush stopped spinning

If you've had the brush out to clean it you need to re-set the trip switch which is a red button at the right side of the brush simply press it in till it clicks.

SOURCE: Dyson DC14 Brush Bar won't turn

You don't need to take it for repairs, I just corrected the same problem on the phone with a tech. Have the head on your lap, make sure the end nearest the little belt has the rounded side of the bar facing you. The squared off end faces towards the machine. Place your left hand pointy finger under the bar (the 2 inch bar next to the little belt) and lift up, while finessing the loose end of the bar into place, with the rounded part still facing you. Then it sort of snaps into place. Now, replace the face plate. In the upright mode, starting at the carpet dial, switch the dial back and forth between carpet and bare floor, ten times. (the tech actually referred to this as re-setting the vac. LOL) Plug the vac in, incline the hand, and start. It should work. It didn't for me the first time and made a horrible sound. That meant I had to go and repeat the process again, but lo and behold, IT WORKED! When in doubt, call the tech and don't let them get away from you; have them stay on the line until the problem is resolved.

SOURCE: the brush bar wont spin on my dyson dc 25... i

Hi its Darran at Dyson.

Simply switch the machine off and stand it upright. Press the brush bar on/off switch once and then turn the machine back on.

When you release the machine into the vacuuming position, the brush bar should start to turn again.

If you still having problems, please contact our Helpline on 0800 298 0298 (UK) or 1866MYDYSON (US).

SOURCE: Dyson DC 28 Brush Bar spins < 5 secs and then red light activates

Is the machine not turning on? There may be a push button circuit breaker on this machine but I doubt it. I have no personel experience with this specific device. Are you sure you have power going to the sweeper? All guards, filters and shields are in their proper place?

Let me know

Dyson D28 the brushes will not spin

Start by cleaning all hair and debris from brush roll and nozzle area. If that doesn't solve it you may need a new PCB. If that doesn't solve it you may need a new nozzle assembly.

Why does my Dyson Dc-39 vacuum have good suction, but the beater bar barley turns?

Hi Greg, it's Jack at Dyson.

The brush bar in DC39's Triggerhead floor tool is driven by an airflow-powered turbine. If your vacuum has strong suction but the brush bar stalls on carpeting, it suggests something may be jamming the brush bar.

Follow the steps shown in our online support guide to remove the brush bar, clear any threads or hair from around the brush bar and endcap, and to check the cleaner head for other obstructions: http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc39/dc39-animal/maintaining-your-dyson-machine/dc38th-removing-blockages

If you continue to have difficulty with the brush bar after completing these checks, I'm sure we can help you further. Please call our experts on 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU). If a replacement Triggerhead floor tool is needed, we can also confirm if this is covered under your Dyson parts and labour guarantee.

When i run the vac the light flashes

Hi Chris, it's Jack at Dyson.

Your DC28's selector pad and/or on/off switch will flash to let you know if there's an issue with the vacuum. This could mean that something is jamming the brush bar, or that the vacuum is set to the wrong height for the type of flooring you're cleaning.

To check the cleaner head for any obstructions, and to remove any threads, hair or other debris from the brush bar, please follow the steps shown in our video guide:

This should resolve the issue, but if your machine continues to flash, please contact us directly so we can talk you through some further troubleshooting checks. You can reach our experts by calling 1-866-693-9766 (US), or 1-877-397-6622 (CA).

Why is a red light flashing

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

If your DC28's on/off switch is flashing, the machine is warning you that something is wrong. It's worth checking the cleaner head and brush bar are free of any threads, hair or other debris or obstructions, as shown in our video guide:

This should resolve the issue, but if you'd like some further advice from our experts after giving this a try, you can reach us by calling 1-866-693-9766 (US) or 1-877-397-6622 (CA).

Also te red light is blinking on my dc 28 animal vacuum

Hi Judi, it's Jack at Dyson.

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulty with your DC28. If the red on/off is flashing, this indicates that something may be jamming the brush bar. To resolve this, please follow the steps shown in the video attached. Make sure there are no obstructions in the cleaner head, and carefully remove any threads or hair from around the brush bar.

You may also want to try raising the brush bar one setting higher using the hight selector pad, as the brush bar will shut itself off if you have it set too low for the carpet pile you're cleaning.

If you'd like some further help after you've given this a try, please email us directly at [email protected] with your contact details. One of our experts will be in touch as soon as possible to run you through some further troubleshooting.

Best wishes,

Jack

My Dyson DC17 Animal brush roller makes noise when it is spinning but not when using the wand. The belt around the roller seems fine and it is not plugged. What else can I check for?

Hi its Darran at Dyson.

You may find it useful to remove the soleplate from the base of the machine and make sure that the brush bar is fitted correctly.

Once this is done, make sure there are no hairs or threads wrapped around the brush barm, particularly
at the ends.

With the soleplate removed you can also ensure that the brush bar and housing are free of blockages.

Once checked, re-fit the soleplate and test the machine.

I hope that this information is useful to you. If you need any further help or advice, contact one of our Ask Dyson experts on 1866MYDYSON.

Kind regards
Darran
