Hi bryon

Here are a few things to check, you may have already checked some of these.

Electricity...Compressors will run best with full 115Vot 15AMP/Or 220V electrical supply from a circuit, over the shortest electrical cord as possible.

Air Leaks..Place your ear close to the compressor and listen for air leaking, if you hear air that is not normal and means you have to locate and repair whatever it is that is leaking.
Check the air unloader valve... The air unloader valve will blown out air when you turned off the compressor, that is normal.
But it should not have air leaking out of it all of the time. If so then it is faulty and in need of repair/replacement.

Valves...If either the intake or exaust valves fail, breaks, or fails to seat, then your compressor will run 24 hours a day and never build up to the correct pressure for shut-off.

Gaskets...Check to see if your gaskets have failed.
You could have a gasket failure between the pistons and you will never know it because it shows no external air leak.
If this situation happens then the air will only cycle between cylinders and never build up the correct air pressure.
One way to check the gasket is remove the air filter, then put your hand over the intake.

If correct then it will suck you hand against the intake.
If the valve or valves have failed then you will feel the air sucking in and blowing out.

Piston Rings and Cylinder...The piston rings could be stuck, broken, or worn and not allowing the correct pressure to build up in your tank.
A worn cylinder will also contribute to the problem of pressure build-up.

Pressure Switch...Check for air leaks at the pressure switch, it has a rubber diaphram that can fail and leak air out of the system.

SOURCE: Air Compressor, low pressure

does the compressor keep running all the time but never gets above 40 or does it turn off at 40?
if it is turning off at 40 I would try using another gauge just to be sure it is 40psi, and if that is the case then you probably have a faulty pressure switch, if the compressor is constantly runnign but won't get past the 40psi then you may have a worn out compressor, check the oil for either a low level or if the oil is dirty, if it is you may just need to drain and refill but if that doesn't fix the issue then you will need to rebuild the compressor

SOURCE: ingersoll rand compressor T30 model 7100

I would wonder A if the wiring was heavey enough to carry that sort of load with out overheating B if the motor is big enough to do it for the same reason( ?what is the duty cycle?) C if the receiver is big enough to allow reasonable time between shut down and start up --- remembering that at start up the motor pulls double the current to start up and if it doesn `thave sufficient time to cool alittle before being called on to do it again and that would prompt the question ,does it have sufficient ventilation? these are all queries that would need addressing before I would try to offer a solution ,one thing is certain ,--there is something wrong

When it shuts down, press DISPLAY SELECT button once and use the up down arrows to see the code just before shutdown.

HIGH AIREND TEMP

HIGH AIR PRESSURE

LOW SUMP PRESSURE

PRESSURE OR TEMP SENSOR FAIL

CHECK MOTOR ROTATION

MOTOR OVERLOAD

FAN MOTOR OVERLOAD

STARTER FAULT

I am assuming this has a Intellisys controller.

SOURCE: 1989 Ingersoll Rand 185 diesel compressor shuts down under load

most have safety shut downs built in, on the compressor side you will have a high discharge temp shut down, usually set to shut down @ 230 degrees F. normal temp should be @ 180F if it is running hot first check oil level on the compressor, and that the radiator is clean. some machines will have a thermostat that will only allow oil flow to go to the radiator after it comes up to about 150 degrees F. you really need to have a manual on the machine to see what other safety's it may have on the compressor and engine side as well.

Testimonial: "Thank you very much for responding. It was a little low on coolant. The comp. oil level was fine. I changed the fuel filter and the prob is gone"

Why does compressor push oil through air filter when it shuts down ?

Minimum pressure check valve is bad. when unit shuts down air pressure goes back thru compressor and pushes oil out the air filter.

you may have a Regulator on Air-Compressor Mount on the Gauge or next to it this allow you to set a pressures from 0 - 200 psi this to helps you maintain steady and reliable operation of your air tools.

Won't build top pressure an shut off

It sounds like your pressure switch is not set correctly. It is possible it is set too high for the compressor you have.

Ingersoll Rand SSR EP60 60hp Compressor w/ Intellisys 39817655 controller. Need to reset target pressure. What is the secret button sequence to access programming mode on this controller? I am aware of...

OK, Compressor should be shut down and showing (ready to start) in display. Press load/unload button once then press hidden right button within 3 seconds. This will let you access the set point program. It will include language, temperature and pressure, rated pressure, etc. Make sure you look at the data tag affixed to the unit and see what the rated pressure is for your unit. You can endanger yourself and equipment by over pressurizing the components of the compressor.

Yeah if no visible leaks your compressor rings are worn an will need to be rebuilt. Check around for rebuild kit and maint cost. May be just as cheak to buy another one, you can get deals on ebay and craig's list. Good luck..Google the model# you may find parts..

I have an ingersoll-rand upright compressor model 2545k10-p, 10 hp, 120 gal, 175psi compressor, and the electric motor will run for about 15-20 seconds and then automatically shut off, and be really hot....

Does the motor rotate the compressor or just set there and hum? How old is this unit? Overload heaters may be to small or unit may be single phaseing. Is there air pressure in the tank when this happens.

Compressor short cycles during operation. (load / unload). hose to guage and pressure switch ok. what could be the problem?

The pressure switch has an adjustment for the low pressure cut in and the high pressure cut out. If the pressure range is set too close the cycles will be short. You need to work out which setting is wrong by looking at the pressure guage when it is cycling and adjust the pressure switch accordingly.
