Zoom lens will not retract.. Canon Power Shot S21S

My Canon Power Shot S21S will not retract the zoom lens position. I put in brand new batteries. It will turn on but makes a clicking sound and does nothing else. Have I broken something? Is this fixable or should I forget it.

I've dropped my Canon Power Shot SD960 IS with the lens out, and now the outer lens is tilted at an angle and wedged tight and the barrel of the zoom will not retract. I've tried turning it off and on,...

Try this first, power off and gently push the lens barrel sideways - not back in!, If the barrel and the lens move slightly, you will get it working after some more manipulation in the same way. If it does not budge, sorry to mention this but your camera sustained more damage and you cannot do do much on your own.

Lens does not zoom in

This is not a common error on canon digital. This is caused due to possible short in zoom control circuit (main pcb). At normal use, if the lens does not retract due to mechanical jam, when the zoom control button is pressed, lens error 18 message supposed to be displayed. Since control circuit is shorted and faulty, error 18 message was not displayed. The remedy for this problem probably requires a replacement of a main pcb. Replacing a main circuit board may run around $100-140. -James

Canon Power Shot 630 Digital Camera

Hey kara M,
Before you take it in for service I would try taking the batteries out for a while and then putting them back in. Often this resets the camera and resolves the issue.

Sincerely,

Zoom

It looks like a problem with the zooming mechanism (lens would not retract or extended) Press the power button on and hold it down while extending and twisting the telescopic zoom lens. It might fix your problem. In any case it could not make it worse

My camera wont turn off

I've purchased several of these cameras used as we liked our first on and it eventually failed with this same problem. I have had four of these now and they all end up with this same problem. Take the battery out then turn the selector to any new position and then off, put the battery back it and the lens should recline and camera turn off. One of the cameras would then work for a while after doing this but then hang up again. I think this is a very common problem based on my experience but no other confirmation than yours.
