The (Brother MFC-8480 DN) machine has 3 mode keys on the control panel: Fax, Scan and Copy
You can set how much time the machine takes after the last
COPY or SCAN operation to return to FAX mode. If you choose OFF, the machine will stay in the mode you
last used.
1.Press MENU, 1,
1.
2. 2. Press up/down
arrows to choose the amount of seconds or OFF.
Press OK.
3. 3. Press STOP/EXIT. I haven't tested this yet, as the machine I'm trying to adjust is at my workplace, but maybe this answer is what we're looking for.

The mode is correct. You can check the rings to answer setting. Default is 4 rings. If your phone line is just for the fax try setting rings to 1. Sometimes sending fax machines go into redial before the 4th ring.
Also, sometimes unplugging the power for 10 seconds will clear any memory that may have locked up the machine.
You must have your resolutions set much higher than the default. Scanner: Go to "user tools", "Scanner features", "scan Settings", "default Scan settings", "resolution".....set to 200dpi
Fax: Resolution may be set to "detail" or "fine" by default , rather than "Standard" ...is either light lit? This would dramatically reduce memory capacity. To set this to default standard resolution is a needlessly difficult task. You can either manually turn it off when sending a fax or change the default "user parameter settings" for the "home position". You can find instructions in the Fax manual (Advanced settings). Your Brother machine#s Sleep Mode function reduces power consumption while the machine is idle. You can adjust how long your Brother machine is idle (between 00 and 99 minutes) before Sleep Mode is initiated. Please note that the default setting is 00 minutes, and the timer automatically resets itself after the Brother machine receives a fax, receives data from your PC, or makes a copy. To adjust your Brother machine#s Sleep Mode setting, please follow these steps:
2. Use the dial pad to enter the amount of time the fax machine is idle before Sleep Mode is initiated (00 to 99 minutes).
3. Press the MENU/SET key to confirm your choice.
4. Press the STOP/EXIT key to exit the menu.
NOTE: If you frequently print, copy, or fax, set the idle time long enough to insure that you will not always have to wait for the Brother machine to warm up.
You must set the FAX RECEIVE MODE to FAX ONLY. The factory default is FAX/TELEPHONE. You can find the proceedure to change FAX RECEIVE MODE in your owners manual. IIf you don't have an owners manual, try pressing the MENU button, then scroll to one of the following: INITIAL SET-UP, FAX SET-UP, OR FAX RECEIVE MODE. One of these should get you to the FAX ONLY receive mode setting.
