SOURCE: Broken torsion spring needs to be replaced

There are indeed two springs that "cross" each other, and they must be both be replaced to ensure full strength.

Normally you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the previously hidden screws you need to remove.

Or you can watch a YouTube video (not a video I made) that demonstrates how it's done.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

SOURCE: how to replace torsion spring

If this is the flip down door. You will need to take apart the side cover of the unit to fasten the spring. Once you have done that you need to put a pen or something to hook it so it doesn't drop down in the unit. If you are unable to hook the spring in the door. You must take the outer cover off the door to hook the spring and then replace the cover. You may find this to be a two person job and may be easier to hook the door before you hook the unit. Some doors are different then others.

How to change the torsion springs in my kitchenaid microwave oven KEMC308KSS01

Replacing the spring isn't very difficult if you're mechanically inclined.
You're basically removing a few screws, the front panel of the door is removed exposing only the glass part that's still hinged. The springs are exposed. Hopefully one spring is still in tack so you can see the orientation of how to put the replacement in. It's not very intuitive on how to do this part.

Door spring on build in microwave oven

Is this a combination built-in oven with microwave on top? And is this microwave one in which the door opens downward like a regular oven? If so, then this is a common problem for this oven/microwave combo, but replacing the spring is not a job for amatures. It takes a professional 45 minutes typically to do this job. It involves removing trim pieces, removing screws that hold the microwave oven in place, pulling the microwave out a couple of inches, and taking the door apart to get to the 2 torsion-bar springs. Replacing them is quite tricky, as is re-assembling the door. I recommend calling Sears Service (1-800-469-4663) to get a seasoned repairman to come out and fix your oven/microwave. Cost will probably be between $180 to $200.
