When the 5100 error happens, there are a few things you can check. The error means that the ink carriage isn't moving across the printer properly. First check if any ink cartridges are not properly seated. (Open the front cover and the paper output tray and then the paper output cover of the printer while it is on. The head cover should open when the cartridge carrier moves into the Fine cartridge replacement position. Then you can double check the cartridges.) Close the covers and check if the problem has been resolved.
If the cartridge carrier doesn't move to the replacement position or the cartridges are not the problem, then you need to check for a jam (paper or other object) blocking cartridge carrier. (Possibly the block is between the cartridge carrier and the "home" position for the carrier.) Turn off the printer and unplug it from the outlet. Open the paper output cover. Avoid the clear film but check for any paper or foreign objects. Move the cartridge carrier to the different sides of the printer to make sure that nothing is under the carrier. Pull any paper slowly and steadily to minimize tearing the paper. You'll have to remove all the small pieces, if they are present. (Note: some paper might have ink on it and thus harder to see. Use a flashlight to help check the corners of the printer.) Check the paper input area as well. After clearing the jam, close the paper output cover, replace the paper in the input tray and check the printer again.
If this doesn't resolve the problem, try resetting the printer. Turn off the printer. Disconnect the data cable if you use the USB cable. (I like to disconnect the cable from both the printer and the computer.) Unplug the power cord for at least 10 minutes (from the outlet and printer, if possible). Reconnect the power cord and data cable. Turn the printer on and check for any error messages.
The next possible problem is a dirty encoder strip. Turn off and unplug the printer. Open the paper output cover and locate the plastic strip. If there are any smears on the strip, use a neutral pH detergent (2-3 drops) in a 1/4 cup of water. Moisten a cotton swab in the detergent solution and squeeze a bit to remove the excess water. (You don't want to drip the water inside the printer.) Wipe the swab across the encoder strip. Use multiple swabs to clean the entire strip. Do not touch the metal rail or push the encoder strip. Check that the encoder strip isn't dislocated from the springs on the ends of the strip. Take another set of cotton swabs, moistened only with water, to remove any detergent residue from the strip. Dry the strip with additional (dry) swabs. Let the printer dry before closing the paper output cover. Then plug in the printer and turn it on.
If this doesn't solve the problem, the printer needs to be serviced. If it is under warranty, contact Canon. Otherwise, decide if it is worth the costs for service. (You have to get the printer to the service center and then pay for the initial evaluation; the evaluation charge will be applied to the repair if you decide to have the unit serviced.)
