Poulan pro with tooless chain tightening - chain will not stay on

I have a 4620 poulan that had the same problem. use it for 10 minutes, spend 15 minutes reinstalling the chain. i sent poulan an email threatening to sue them and they decided to send me the parts to change it over to the old style for free. try poulan.com

I think the saw you have is a "PP4620AVX Gas Saw" you want to modify to a "PP4620AVHD Gas Saw". Open the "PP4620AVHD Gas Saw"on the "Handle, Chassis & Bar Assembly" detail; item 64 is the adjuster assembly ($2.53) and item 67 is the clutch cover ($21.83). I suggest you call them first. The cover may contain the adjuster already. It is also a good idea to touch base with the real experts about your saw.

This may be a dumb question, but you are loosening the bar knob before adjusting the tension, and then re-tightening it, right? If you've had the bar off recently, you may want to check that the adjusting pin is in the adjusting hole in the bar.

Go to where you can get parts for your saw and order the clutch cover for the model that does not come with the tooless tightening system. The design is poor and I had the same problem with mine. I ordered the clutch cover for the poulan wild thing and it fit perfect (although it is lime green) and my saw works great now.

Some of us need to cut wood NOW, not wait for a message from Poulan, order a part etc. Those are the best solution, but if a tree is hanging over your garage, or the temp is dropping tonight, try this: If you start your saw with the chain tight and then just let it idle, you will see the little adjusting wheel start to turn on it's own, and the chain will loosen itself. I am not sure what "normally" keeps this from happening, but you can improvise something to keep it from turning on its own (cardboard or wood scrap wedge, screw, ?duct tape, etc.) and that will keep it from loosening while you are waiting for the new cover etc.

Same problem. The tensioner is JUNK. Remove the click lever wheel and throw it away. Solution is to go to hardware store and buy one nut to fit the one stud which is usable to tighten to hold the bar.

I am sorry, but I don't recall if the nut is metric or SAE, I think it is metric. However, most chainsaws use two nuts to hold the bar in place. This has proven to be unnecessary to have two, since just one nut has held tight for months!

I would echo the same issues calling Poulan about this. They suggest I take the saw to a Poulan authorized repair shop. The saw is not worth any money to justify taking it to a repair shop. Honestly I am disgusted with this saw. I have had 3 poulans over the years. This is my LAST Poulan. If this is the best they have, then I would surmise Poulan won't be around long!
