Poulan pro with tooless chain tightening - chain will not stay on

I have a poulan pro 18" chainsaw. It has the tool-less chain tightening. I will try to adjust the bar to tighten the chain but the chain will not stay tight. How can I keep the chain tight for more than one or two cuts?

My saw keeps throwing the chain.
I have found that the problem is the tightening knob (not the adjusting wheel) It backs off while running. I have cleaned it and checked for wear, but it still comes loose. I have resorted to sticking duct tape over the knob when using the saw.
I suspect this is a design defect and was surfing the web looking for a recall or replacement part.
Dangerous problem and causes damage to chain guide due to burs on chain that must be filed off.

I have a 4620 poulan that had the same problem. use it for 10 minutes, spend 15 minutes reinstalling the chain. i sent poulan an email threatening to sue them and they decided to send me the parts to change it over to the old style for free. try poulan.com

@ nuttdeerhunt;
I wish you had posted this as a new entry but; ask and ye shall receive. Go here:

I think the saw you have is a "PP4620AVX Gas Saw" you want to modify to a "PP4620AVHD Gas Saw". Open the "PP4620AVHD Gas Saw"on the "Handle, Chassis & Bar Assembly" detail; item 64 is the adjuster assembly ($2.53) and item 67 is the clutch cover ($21.83). I suggest you call them first. The cover may contain the adjuster already. It is also a good idea to touch base with the real experts about your saw.
I send wishes for a Prosperous New Year and HTH.

After reading the other comments you will probably need a pair of "Bar nuts" item 68 ($0.56 each?) and perhaps a scrench (not shown) pn PWE 530031135 ($9.75)

    Merry Christmas

This may be a dumb question, but you are loosening the bar knob before adjusting the tension, and then re-tightening it, right? If you've had the bar off recently, you may want to check that the adjusting pin is in the adjusting hole in the bar.

Go to where you can get parts for your saw and order the clutch cover for the model that does not come with the tooless tightening system. The design is poor and I had the same problem with mine. I ordered the clutch cover for the poulan wild thing and it fit perfect (although it is lime green) and my saw works great now.

Some of us need to cut wood NOW, not wait for a message from Poulan, order a part etc. Those are the best solution, but if a tree is hanging over your garage, or the temp is dropping tonight, try this: If you start your saw with the chain tight and then just let it idle, you will see the little adjusting wheel start to turn on it's own, and the chain will loosen itself. I am not sure what "normally" keeps this from happening, but you can improvise something to keep it from turning on its own (cardboard or wood scrap wedge, screw, ?duct tape, etc.) and that will keep it from loosening while you are waiting for the new cover etc.

Same problem. The tensioner is JUNK. Remove the click lever wheel and throw it away. Solution is to go to hardware store and buy one nut to fit the one stud which is usable to tighten to hold the bar.

I am sorry, but I don't recall if the nut is metric or SAE, I think it is metric. However, most chainsaws use two nuts to hold the bar in place. This has proven to be unnecessary to have two, since just one nut has held tight for months!

I would echo the same issues calling Poulan about this. They suggest I take the saw to a Poulan authorized repair shop. The saw is not worth any money to justify taking it to a repair shop. Honestly I am disgusted with this saw. I have had 3 poulans over the years. This is my LAST Poulan. If this is the best they have, then I would surmise Poulan won't be around long!

How to adjust a poulon pro chain saw 46cc 20" chain tighting

First, I'd read the manual if in doubt. No matter the type of adjuster, tool-less or not, you loosen the bar nuts, tighten the adjuster until the chain just touches the bar on the bottom (while holding the bar nose up) then tighten the bar nuts. Chain should move easily.
Re Poulan chain tightening. Be sure it's oiled and sharp, of course.

How do you tighten the chain

There are a number of different adjuster types, manual and tooless, manual adjusters will have a screw driver slotted head screw either on the front of the saw or at the side, slacken off the bar nut/nuts turn the screw clockwise to increase the chain tention, tooless adjusters will have a large plastic nut with a fold out wing to aid removeal, slacken this off there will then be a thumb wheel to turn which will adjust the chain.

I have a Poulan Pro PP4620 AVX 46cc Gas Chainsaw w/20

If this is the tooless adjustment, it sounds like the small gears in the cover have stripped, remove the side cover, turn it over and remove the cover over the tentioning mechanism, replace parts as required.

Chain dowsn't stay tight

Between the chain bar and the body there is an adjusting screw, if the adjusting screw is stripped it will not pull on the chain bar to tighten the chain.
procedure for tightening chain. loosen the chain guard nuts, tighten the bar adjusting screw by turning to the right or clockwise, the chain has to roll freely around the bar but not bind. check with gloves or rag, don't use bare hands to avoid accidents. once chain is adjusted, tighten the chain guard nuts. good luck!

I can't keep the tension on the blade tight. After a short period of use it loosens up and won't stay on the bar.

Check threads on tension bolt may be worn or adjuster threads that bolt screws into may b worn. Odd thing is if bar plate is tight bar should not move.

I can't tighten the chain. I turn the wheel to tighten it, but the little catch that fits in the hole on the bar does not move. the wheel turns but the chain remains loose

If this is the tooless chain tentioner, i would suggest the small gear arrangment in the cover has stripped, many of the gears were only plastic, remove the screws holding the cover over the mechanism and check what has striped

Chain wont stay tight

Could be the correct nuts have been replaced with regular nuts. The original had a knurls on the nuts to hold in place. If they do not then you will have to do as bunnydawg says, use lock washers.
