Loud clicking noise on accelertion only.

The noise is during acceleration only, if I take my foot off the gas it stops, back on the gas and it starts back up. I can rev the engine in the garage and do not hear the noise. Put in neutral while driving and rev engine and I don't hear it. Definitely more noticable from the passenger seat. Hard to locate exactly where the noise is coming from but sounds like right side and forward of engine area.

1988 Toyota Camry LE clicking noise during acceleration

start with premium gas or injector cleaner, could be a low octane ping. this may be hard to diagnose with out hearing the noise so the other thing i would have you do is remove the belts and run the engine. sometimes when a bearing in an alternator, idler pulley, a/c compressor or belt tensioner goes bad they can make a clicking noise. try to listen if the noise is coming from the belt area, the transmission area or some other spot. spin all the pulleys with the engine off and wiggle them to see if any are bad

Clunking/ticking noise during acceleration in 3rd and 4th gears

This sounds on the base of it to be pre ignition, if so the moment you take the foot off the gas it goes? The cure is to retard the ignition timing slightly, have you recently changed your octane of fuel? this will also cause this?
The noise is caused by the expansion of the compressed gases expanding before the piston reaches top dead centre causing the piston to \'rattle\' left unchecked will cause permanent damage and engine failure

it sounds to me like you have inferior gas in the tank, or some water has gotten in your fuel. you may be able to add a little denatured alcohol to the gas and it may burn off the water. good luck

Loud clicking noise and black smoke...

Seems like an injector and valves. Check if all injectors are giving same pressure, none leaking or damaged, the injector pump working fine and all filter in the pump are clean (yes there are small filters inside under every electro-sensor), get valves gaps checked and adjusted. at this kind of mileage its a must.
