There is a penny stuck and the washer stops with water in it after it tries to spin. It makes a loud grinding noise and stops.. then we hear the coin drop. I have tried to get it out with a wire coat hanger. I was able to remove a quarter and dime..no penny. It is still stuck. I have tree kids and my laundry is mounding. Help!! Does anyone know how to get those white drum spinning things off?

The Service manual has the procedure starting on page 37 for the tumbler removal, take a look and see if you feel comfortable to give it a try. If you are handy or someone you know has basic mech. skill sets you can perform. You, I and many others need to check those pockets. Here is the service manual link.

The manual doesn’t call out the torx driver size required for tumbler removal. I just removed my tumbler cap and measured, it’s a #20 torx driver. If you call a repair service in make sure you have your Model# and Serial# number ready to pass along to them. Good for you and your husband for rolling up your sleves to DIY the fix. This machine is very repairable ya just got to have a little hands on, turn over some rocks with troubleshooting and give it a try. I'm not appliance repair person I work in the Telecom industry (Cable). Last Dec my machine starting throwing dc/UC errors. Since then the machine has become a hobby. I believe I have helped a number of folks with clutch issues. I'm sorry to say most folks can't tolerate the down time and the washer heads to the curb for bulk trash pickup.

If you do a Spin Only cycle with no clothes in the wash basket do you hear the grinding noise?” I was concerned from your failure description that there may be a clutch or transmission issue.
It now sounds like the belt on the motor is squealing because the system is locked up, maybe a clutch failure or transmission failure or a combination of the two. Lets go back to my first post. Please do a Spin Only cycle with no clothes in the wash basket. I would ask you to raise the washer top and see if the wash basket rotates CCW in spin cycle. To raise the top of the machine for viewing wash basket operation. Insert a flat blade putty knife approximately 2.5” from the left and right sides of the washer top, depress the spring tabs securing machine top to the washer base (See page 33 of the SM for putty knife insertion point).
Now start a Spin Only cycle and with the washer top raised, does the wash basket rotate CCW with no grinding noise, are the tumblers rotating in Spin Only cycle?. If you here the squealing noise please check for any error codes in the display then hit the off button to turn the machine off and post back. I work 4pm to 12:30AM east coast time. Hang in there and let’s see what the next step is. Rich

I did set my FAV6800AWW to your settings and I go into drain spin cycle around the 22 minute mark of the Quick Wash cycle. If you are taking the grinding noise at that part of the cycle then I believe the clutch has hard failed and binding up the motor causing the belt squeal. I'm on the east coast and leave for work at 3:30pm.

Are you failing with dc/UC errors? Please let me know. If your are failing in that part of the cycle with dc/UC errors and you have no grinding noise or belt screech (possible hard failure of the clutch) then the clutch may just need some maintenance clean up. If you are failing in spin cycle with dc or UC errors or both this is what I believe is happening. I feel the tumblers in your machine are trying to rotate in spin cycle because of a clutch malfunction. If you can do the maintenance I discuss below or have a friend that can perform this maintenance it may just solve your issue. After the clutch maintenance I can wash a single pair of socks or a full load of bath towels and the machine works as designed. Prior to that maintenance fix I could only complete a wash cycle if there were no clothes in the wash basket. I will try to help you solve this and hopefully extend the service life of your machine. Look at the Service Manual page 47 and see what is involved in the clutch removal. It's not too bad just a tight work area. If you want to give it a try I can supplement the manual info. My Maintenance fix on Dec 5, 08.
I just did a repair on my FAV6800AAW by lubricating the needle bearings in the clutch pulley hub, the tub displacement sensor checked OK per the service manual check. I was getting dc/uc errors in the spin cycle, washer was purchased in 7/05. I have basic mechanical skills and used a socket wrench to remove clutch pulley, just follow the service manual removal steps to remove the clutch pulley. Pull the plastic cover off the clutch pulley and inspect the spring, clean/lube needle bearings and the clutch hub coupler that drives spinner shaft. I used WD40 I may need to re-lube down the road with a good light grease. It took a few tries for me to get the clutch pulley to stay on after re-install and power up, getting the clutch pulley seated properly is the trick. I did not remove the washer tub for this fix, I believe I saw a posting where someone did. I just leaned the washer back to get a better reach angle, it is a tight work area. I did not want to junk 3.5 yr old $1k machine without trying a fix.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! My husband (totally not handy) fixed it this morning. It really was easy he said after he bought the tool you mentioned. He was worried... so he went to the local washer repair shop to talk about it and they lied and gave him wrong info. He came back home and printed your instructions and took them to Gilroys and they said you were right. Thanks sooo incredibly much. You saved us a ton on what they would have charged for this minor repair. Oh, in case you wondered there were 2 quarters, 3 dimes, 1 nickle, and 2 pennies under just one of the white things. Crazy!! I'll always check pockets after this...
Ok... so I thought it was fixed. Now it is stoping at 22 min left on the quick load, light stain load. Everytime I unplug it and start it over... it stops with 22 min left. It sounds like there is breaks going off.. or like wet sneekers on the hall floor. It will start spinning/rotating then it stops, repeats, stops...... until I unplug it. There is always about a gallon of water remaining in the washer. Do you have anymore wisdom for me?
my maytag neptune tl had a quarter stuck in the drainer and we were able to take it out and now it stops at 22min help help me please ive been without a washer for too long
