Slight crackle on left speaker if turn volume up

Have you tried cleaning the controls were Servisol Video 40 or other switch cleaning fluid?

If it ocours only when turning your volume pot then the pot is worn or dirty inside. I f you are handy get a new pot that is EXACTLY the same and replace it It is simple if you can solder as there is usually only tree connections

To troubleshoot the problem start with the bit that is working - the left speaker.

1. Unplug the input leads on the back of the left speaker and swap them round.
2. If sound now comes out of right speaker and not the left the problem is with your sound source (computer, IPOD or whatever) or the connecting cable is faulty.
3. If there is still no sound from the right speaker try turning the volume control knob up and down quickly several times - does this produce any sound from the right speaker? Sometimes the electrical contacts get dirty and this can help clean them.
4. Turn the speakers off using the volume control knob. Disconnect the speaker wire for the right speaker from the OUTPUT on the left speaker (push the red and black tabs downwards and gently pull the wires out. Find a small 1.5 volt battery (an AA or AAA size will do nicely) and touch the bare ends of the speaker wire briefly on the battery terminals. If you hear a slight crackling sound the wire and the speaker are okay and the problem is in the amplifier, which will need repair or replacement - not a job for an amateur.
5. If you don't get any sound from the battery test find another piece of speaker wire (any piece of 2 core cable with bare ends will do for testing) and repeat the battery test. If you get sound then replace the speaker wire. If not remove the speaker wire again and go to next step.
6. Lay the speaker face downwards and carefully unscrew the back panel (don't do this if it is still under manufacturers warranty - take it back for repair or replacement). Lift the back panel off carefully and slowly taking care not to pull the connecting wires inside the cabinet, which will probably be quite short. You may have to settle for just rotating the back panel slightly so that you can see inside if the wires are too short to do otherwise.
7. Use sticky tape to tightly attach the bare ends of the speaker wires to the terminals of the battery. Touch the loose ends of the speaker wires on the two metal terminals where the internal wires are joined onto the back of the big loudspeaker cone. If this produces a crackling sound it is the internal wiring in the cabinet that needs re-soldering. Otherwise the loudspeaker unit has failed and will need replacement.

It sounds like the volume control itself is causing the problem. All you need do is get to it from the inside the unit and spray it with Servisol switch cleaner. That should do the trick. It's just dust in the track of the control. If there are any other rottary controls spray them too!

Check the audio output setting on the nuvi. There is a possibility that the FM Transmitter setting has been turned on or that the device has been muted.
To check the audio output setting:

1. Touch the Speaker icon below the Wrench icon.
2. At the bottom of the screen, touch Audio Output.
3. Make sure that the Internal Speaker is selected and touch OK (660, 670, 680, and 5000 models only).
4. Make sure that the MUTE box does not have a check mark in it. If it does, touch the box to clear the selection.
5. Make sure the volume level is at a reasonable percent level.

test you speaker maybe there is a bad connection some where is the spk. box its self ,try changing speakers left to right .
it the spk. are ok open amp see all the connections within the amp .

That is a common symptom of not properly grounding of negative side of the output of power amplifier section.Just resolder all component parts joint in power amp.sectiton and double the solder all negative ground.Also clean the pots of all volume controls and selector with a lighter fluid or desame that fluid so whatever sound or crackling noise eliminated and works normal again.. No its not EMI.- I have them too and mine are little over a year old. Have noticed the faint smell of electricial burning. Checked the sub and the amp/pwr supply in there must be slowly breaking down. I cant turn my speakers up past 25 percent volume and the crackling/hum gets very bad, We should all be looking for replacement at this point.

ALL speaker jacks must be loaded and closed for any sound to come out of this system. Missing one speaker, or one bad connection and you will get no sound or some will work and some will not. speaker wires need to go deep into speaker jack holes.

The internal power supply of the speaker system was busted.
