A few days ago I went to my friends house to move some files i had on my WD external hard drive. First time I plugged it in the power supply and usb it worked just fine. Then an hour later I plugged it up again. First in the ac and it booted just like normal. And then when my friend plugged in the usb connector, the whole house went black. The dead switch went out. After we got the power back up, we found that my hdd isn't working. It won't even boot. It's just standing there. We checked it's power adapter and found it smells like it has been burned. Probably thats the problem. And I'm lucky the warranty is still valid.
I just want to be sure if my hdd is okay. There aren't any smells coming from it but I just want to be sure. Could have something happen to my hard disk?

I have this same problem and found a great write-up here that has text and photos of the process. I haven't tried the process with mine but there are plenty of responses to his posting indicating success. Good luck.

SOURCE: HDD not Seen in system.
First things first .....check for power cable and data cable and make
sure they are not tampered or damaged now move to next step>>>
kindly remove all jumpers in HDD now go to
Control panel>Administrative tool>Computer management>Disk management
you can see the disk here and change settings accordingly like assigning path and drive letter if this does not work
then just see that is it recognized in device manager as unrecognized
device then update driver for HDD even now if the problem persists
KIndly consult the manufacturer
Thanks And Regards
It sounds as though the drive has failed. A hard drive making clicking noises is never a good thing, often indicating a problem involving the read/write head and its servo.
To see if the drive has failed (I believe you mentioned you have a mac?) connect the drive and go into disk utility. If the drive is listed to the left, you may be able to format it. I fear, however, this will not be the case and the drive has failed.
You may or may not be able to recover your files, via data recovery specialists, though these tend to be costly.
http://www.drivecrash.com/ is one such data recovery service you may want to look into.
If you would like to try software recovery on your own, I recommend Data Rescue II (http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php) You can use the trial to see if your data can be recovered.
Good luck!

sounds like you are using the wrong power supply. Check the amp output on the power plug you plug into the wall make sure its the same as the amp input of your external harddrive

You will need to try formatting the drive. You can do this from the drive management section on the Mac.
