My 95 year old grandfather just purchased an Optiplex GX270 but it didn't come with a modem. He only has dial up so my question is what is the best modem to buy to fit this small computer. Thanks in advance for your help!!!
If the Optiplex is a Standard or Mini-tower any V92 56K modem will work. If it is a Small Form Factor it will need a low or half-height(LINK) modem. Or you could always use a usb 56K external modem (LINK)

It is not a good idea taking a hard drive from one computer
and using it on another. When windows is installed, it loads
all the drivers for the hardwares attached to a particular
motherboard. Your new Dell GX270 cannot function properly
with the drivers loaded for a different motherboard.
You can fix all your compatibility problems by installing a
fresh new copy of Windows 95 on your GX270.
it will work fine.just install the drivers and it will pick up the signals from wireless router or modem..dial up and dsl are two different connections.
If it's a dial up modem this is probably normal, if it's for adsl (fast internet) then contact your provider to have them replace it, if it isn't working.
Do you know the motherboard mfg?
if it something other than the Dell then you can get the drivers.
USB drivers are mostly generic and are available at Microsoft. there is an application called "Driver Detective" and they are good. They check the computer and get everything you need.
