Unless your machine is worn out----it's probably the pressure switch:

A: needs adjustment

B: needs to be replaced

XYZ: head gasket leak, broken line, other air leaks?

SOURCE: Craftsman air compressor 1 HP 12 gal 125 psi

this is probably an "oilless" compressor, it has "piston" with a thin ring of leatherlike material acting as a piston ring, the "cylinder" is an aluminum sleeve - what usually happens is the cylinder gets scratched from dirt or just wear or the leather ring deteriorates, that's why it will go only so far - the only fix for this is to replace the cylinder and the piston

Probably the check valve has failed. It apparently is where the pipe goes into the tank from the compressor.

SOURCE: craftsman 3 gal air compressor - no air presssure

Check the head gasket. Mine just did the same thing. Mine was blown between the two chambers on top. It's very thin right there. I went to the auto parts store and bought some gasket and made my own for about $6. It's up a working great...finally. BTW the gasket kit is on back order right now at Sear's parts website. It appears we aren't the only ones with the problem!

Colin just bought a like new craftsman 150 psi horizontal air compressor but there was no manual and we can't figure out how to get it started - help, please

Many of these incorporate the switch on the pressure switch. Mine has a red button that one pulls upward to enable the pump. Check around where the pressure switch is located.

I have a 6 gal, 150 psi craftsman compressor. There is a leak under the plastic housing. How do I seperate the tank from the compressor?

This product manual will show the exploded view on how it comes apart/goes together:

1 hp 3gal craftsman compressor will only build up to 20lbs pressure in tank. how much compression should single cyl have on compression stroke?

A piston in any engine should be around 100 psi I would guess. A Chevy 350 used to be around 150 psi. An air compressor that only pumps enough air to reach 20psi is obviously too low on compression. Nailers and the like need 80 or more psi. The intake valves may be shot, the unloader might be stuck or piston rings are worn.

Craftsman 30 Gal. 150 PSI Not building air over 45lbs

The compressor valve may have a faulty gasket or seal, and maybe leaking air internally. Or the compressor might be going downhill. You can try to replace the valve seal and see if that makes a difference, otherwise you need to replace the compressor.

My craftsman air compressor model 919 16737 1.1 hp 17 gal 150 psi won't build up any air pressure. It runs but sounds a little odd.

Probably the check valve has failed. It apparently is where the pipe goes into the tank from the compressor.
