I could hear the sound from laptop integrated speakers, but i could not hear any sound through the headset connected. In my device manager i can see a warning mark against modem for high definition audio Bus
Use google to search for High Definition Audio Bus. Download it and install it. However I think you have a problem with the connector or the headset.

Have you downloaded the Xp sofware update from the Compaq website? Maybe it contains the extra drivers?
If you know which audio chip(From manual,also downloadable for below) you could go to their website for the audio driver.

An alternate solution is to use a driver update program to find and install missing or outdated device drivers.
