It has always been really easy to unscrew to empty but now it will not open. It is like something is jamming it but there is nothing to jam it. I don't want to force it and break it. Is there a way around it?
Sounds like it may be cross threaded , or bits of grit holding it tight ,try tapping round the rim with screwdriver handle to see if it will loosen anything that's holding it ,then get someone else to help you hold one end and you hold the other end and twist..

remove vac from charging base. twist the two section apart. it will turn about 1 inch and then pull apart. this will expose the filter to remove to empty the dirt. reassemble in reverse.

Grab the upper and lower conic sections, one in each hand. Twist the lower section clockwise to remove from the upper section. The filter is in the section - remove and empty, then replace and twist back to close and lock.
