When you use a projector it automatically keeps a timer of how long the lamp has been used for. The message that comes up on screen saying "please replace the lamp" comes up not because it's some how sensing that the lamp is getting old, but because the lamp hours gets to a certain number (usually up around 1500 hours). Because of this when you replace the lamp you need to reset the lamp hours counter, or the projector doesn't even know you've changed it. Every projector does it this way, and they all do it a different way, I googled the model you gave us and found this set of instructions on how to do it, so give it a go.
Reset the lamp counter hours of operation for the projector SONY VPL-CX61 Using the remote commander while the unit is powered up, press "ENTER", "ENTER", "LEFT" and "ENTER" in sequence. A prompt will appear on the screen asking if you wish to enter the factory mode. Press the "UP" key on the remote and the unit is now in service mode. This sequence will add two new groups to the customer setup menu. Press the "MENU" button to view. Whenever the lamp is replaced, the lamp timer should be reset. With the unit in the "factory" mode, press "RESET", "LEFT", "RIGHT" and "ENTER" on the remote commander. Verify the lamp hours have been reset to zero in the service menu.
you may have to reset the lamp hour meter to get it to work, put the projector on stanby and press the remote buttons, reset - back - forward - reset, (this is the code for a vpl hs20 projector it may be slighty different for your model)
The unit must be on Standby and then you press the reset, <,> and enter. I would recommend doing it a couple of times. You can do this from the remote. I would assume it can be done on the units control panel also. The main thing is to have the unit in standby. It doesn't work if the units not in standby mode.
To reset the lamp timer: 1) With the projector plugged in and turned off, press the 'ON/STANDBY' button to put the projector in 'STANDBY' mode. NOTE: You have to press the button on the projector itself, you cannot use the remote for this step (this is not clear in manual). 2) Now, using the remote, press the following keys in order: RESET, <--, -->, ENTER. 3) Timer should now read '0'.
