First, grab your friend or family members ipod and see if it works. If it does, then your problem is your ipod.
You'll probably end up needing to restore the ipod. connect your ipod to the computer and click restore. It's a major pain to have to do this I know, just because it takes forever. You wont loose any music or other data if you sync and transfer purchases first, but it fixes most problems.
If the different ipod doesn't work, then it's the sounddocks problem and you should return it. If for whatever reason you can't return it, there are ways to hack the sounddock so that it will take an auxiliry plug instead of the dock. Here's the simplest one I found, but there's a bunch of articles on it if you look.
