I bought a used Toshiba 51HC85 less than 2 months ago. It has been working fine...until yesterday. I watched the morning news, and when I came home for lunch, it wouldn't come on. The red power light comes on (doesn't blink), and there is a low humming noise coming from the speakers. The screen will not come on. We have tried unplugging the set for several hours, but with the same result. Can anyone help me pinpoint the problem, or estimate repair costs?

Sounds like the power supply went south on you.

Its likely that one of the supplied voltages is missing or low coming out of the regulated power supply. Its not something that you'll be able to do yourself. If you call a Toshiba authorized service center, expect to spend $250-400 to resolve this.

Hi, the motherboard could have been affected. Since you have ever replaced the power supply, its better you get a new motherboard.

White horizontal lines covering picture on Toshiba 51HC85

The set uses a Hyper board inside that processes all signals, it is well known for this issue, board no longer available=reason is quite simple : about a dozen tiny surface mounted filter caps on that board with age dry out, at first it will work after warms up as poor caps regain some capacitance and seem to be ok.

Buy a new set, you can send that board out and have it repaired/rebuilt but the last one I saw which was under extended warranty cost about 200 just for the board rebuild.

In the last 4 years Here on Fixya I have encountered only 2 people who were able with instructions had the skill to remove the board and replace those caps, both were top notch computer repair techs.

Hello..Toshiba 51HC85, 2005 model. Turn on TV and verticle wavy lines appear until TV is warmed up completely. After warm up the picture is great again. Any ideas?

I've had the same problem for about the last 6 months. My workaround which was to leave the tv on 24 7 and just turn off the TWC service box. But now the symptoms are vertical dark lines going all the way across screen. My guess is that it will cost more to fix than worth it. I paid @$2000 for it new in 2004. Technology has gotten better so I may just go out and get a Samsumg for considerably less and be way better off. None of Toshiba's products had done well for me. 2 laptops, 3 tvs, etc. have taught me this.

New watch not working

I would go and get the battery replaced. Watches will run off the battery even when sitting on the shelf in the stores. Replacement are usually less than $10 at the mall or check a jewelry store.

System Error

FYI...the best suggestion I've seen is to hold the channel up and play buttons simutaneously....thereby causing the machine to return to the "factory initialized" state. So far so good for me. We'll see. photog1
