Camera will not take a picture and is flashing this msg in the LCD near the shutter button,
Remove the lens, clean the contacts, reattach the lens, and jiggle the lens to seat the contacts. If that doesn't fix it, either the camera or the lens may require service.

I solved it! Not without the help from others on this forum who posted the same problems and solutions. I read that "F--" is an indication that there is an electrical break in the connection between the camera body and the lens. I took the lens off the body and carefully re-attached it. It fixed the problem.

Nikon D80 getting the "F---" message. I would turn off/on sometimes several times and then the lens would work. Similar problem with battery- saying its dead but it wasn't. I was traveling in Egypt and getting very frustrated- losing shot opportunities. I purposely had been using an 18-200 lens all purpose so I wouldn't need to remove it and open camera to potential dust. Taking off lens/putting back on didn't help me. Eventually I just blew on the cpu connections on the lens and put it back on. No further problems. Just cleaning cloth on the battery connection as well. Also worked. Nikon help suggests I send the camera in for cleaning, but I'd rather not do that. Yet I'm concerned my "solution" is coincidental and not a long term fix.
Any advice?
I have same problem. There is a bit of "play" with all my lenses since i bought the camera new when it first came out. I was getting the "F---" message and wiggling the lens to get it to work again. Arrgh!! I was missing shots like crazy to the point of scraping the camera and buying something in a Canon full frame. I cleaned the contacts on the camera body and everything works like new again. Sometimes I feel like such a noob.
