At times, when I press the shutter button, it will not fire. Sometimes if I persist, it will then fire several times consecutively. Usually, I have to turn it off and on to get it to fire again. This just started happening. I have used this camera almost daily for the last year in the studio. It happens when sync'd to a strobe or without outdoors as well. It is not a focusing problem. Thanks for any help!
Sounds like you have a bad release switch. The switch is a bunch of stacked rectangular metal leaves, and they develop metal fatigue or just crack with heavy use. Unfortunately Nikon stopped selling parts July 13th, 2012 so you are pretty much out of luck trying to fix it yourself or find a reasonably priced independent servicer to fix it for you. [You might get lucky and find one that still has the part in stock, or find someone selling them on Ebay]. You will most likely have to send it to Nikon. Good luck.

has the lens stuck up? put it temporarily on 'M" and try to turn the focus ring. this should be freely turning;
otherwise you may want to check the camera body to lens electrical contacts (silver).. a small dab of alcohol to a q-tip.. make sure its not that wet..then try to clean the contacts.
