I have a Kenmore coldspot side by side refrigerator and the refrigerator and freezer won't stay cold enough unless the frig temp. is set to "5". if not, frig items aren't really cold and the freezer items melt.
Setting it to 5 is what the manufacturer recommends. If you set it to 1 and the frig is still not cold, then you probably have a faulty cold control (thermostat)

I have the exact same problem with mine.. I changed the temp.. since my vegetables kept freezing.... notice everything in my freezer went soft.. even changing the setting back to how it was... my ice cream still is the consistancy of soft serve.
