Temp was set at 450 for baking potatoes. I had just put the potato in the oven, and about 10 minutes later I heard a "beep"; went to check and the display told me the oven was in self-clean mode!!! The door was locked; the potato was in the oven. I googled the problem and it was suggested I depress and hold the OFF/Cancel button. I tried it, but all I got was an error message which I didn't write down...something like F-2 E-???. I then went to the circuit box and turned off the circuit.
SOURCE: When I try to start the self-cleaning oven,
there are switches under the cooktop that go bad frequently. i do not recommend ever using the self clean mode in an oven. the oven gets so hot that things have a tendency to melt because they dont build stuff like they used to. there is inadequate insulation in modern ovens. use easy off and follow the label directions. it'll be cheaper in the long run, trust me.

SOURCE: I have a Whirlpool Self
When you use your self clean feature, your oven heats up to over 800 degrees and this normally takes your electronic computer control board out.
SOURCE: Whirlpool Oven Died During Cleaning Cycle No Display Now Locked
Had same problem with my KitchenAid. 10 years old. Ran self cleaning cycle, oven died!!!! Called repair. Appears to be thermal fuse. Part on order. Microcomputer had some brown spots on it. Tey wanted us to replace it too. But will wait to see if fuse is problem. Repair - $150 vs. $570. If it's the higher price, we'll buy a new oven before putting that kind of money into it. Will NEVER run a clean cycle again even if I have to buy a new oven.
SOURCE: Trying to get gas self clean/oven to start. Getting error E1 F5.
E1 F5 is bad door lock assembly. Only way to repair is to replace the locking assembly completly. Sorry. Hope this helps.

Probably a bad door lock solenoid. That is some kind of door lock problem. Trouble is they are not all the same. This training manual shows locations of model number. Perhaps if you post that I might can come up with a tech sheet and you would get a better answer. see page 4
