The power is on, it's connected to my Dell laptop (XPS) and it doesn't display anything for a few seconds, not even the 'no signal' message. I'm using the laptop in extended screen mode. I can be using it for a while and then all of a sudden it blacks out for a few seconds.

I have just had this same problem. The problem mostlikely is a blown fuse on the inverter board. Mine was blown on the board and also a Capacitor (470nF/25V) was bad beside the Fuse.
I replaced both and monitor is working now again. After install the picture was a little grainy with little artifacts. In another post i found that the Power Supply board needs to be cleaned for unwanted residue. After that picture was fine again.
BEWARE that you need a soldering iron and a steady hand to replace these parts. If you are unfamiliar with soldering at all have an expert take a look at this. The Power boards uses 220v so DO NOT connect it to the Power when opened.

nokerns, Internal ac to dc power supply problem might be cause of your "black screen of death" that plagues all brands of "cold-cathode-fluorescent-lamp" back-lit lcd monitors. If unit is covered by Samsung warranty, then contact Samsung and complain about "premature failure" of the unit's power supply and see if they will do a swapout for same model unit. As a side-note, you should also learn how to do the "black-screen-of-death" flashlight test that every owner of a ccfl backlit lcd monitor should know how to perform and understand the results of the test. The message says that the monitor doesn't receives signal - which is normal. Since the problem appears only after you plug in the cable in means that the problem is located there - something is wrong with your pc, most likely the video card has died.
