I have a Speed Queen Model AWS17NW. Last week it started to act up where it would fill with water and agitate just fine. However, it would not spin and drain the water or go into the rinse cycle. I let it sit for a while advanced the knob a little and it drained and completed the rest of the cycle, rinse and final spin with no problems. I was looking through some manuals and was running another load to try and figure out what was going on and now it doesn't seem to want to spin and drain at all. It will start to spin and stop within less than a minute. There is a faint mechanical smell that I am detecting. I know my model has a motor overload protector that I think is being triggered but am not sure what is causing the issue. The circuit breaker is not being thrown so I do not think it is an electrical surge. Could the belt or pulley assembly need replacing? I bought the unit in May 2006.

Check your outlet filter, most likely it is blocked, preventing the water from draining out. Chk your pump too. Before this disconnect from the wall socket; and also check the pipe coming from the tub to the filter. Siphon out the excess water from inside the machine before you open the pipes.

My mum had this problem. I think it had something to do with the barrel coming loose.. - get a plummer ;)

Please empty your machine and run the machine empty. If the washer goes through the whole cycle without any clothes. Please let me know

It sounds like you pump is clogged. If there is something stuck in your pump the motor can't spin it to drain the water. If that is the problem then it's easy to fix. Simply clear the pump and put it back on, just make sure to clamp off the hoses to the pump with hose clamps or you will have water every where. If that is not the problem though then it means that your timer is bad and that is a little more expensive. Try the pump first though and hope that that is all it is. If not, like I said, you will need a new timer but most likely your pump is just clogged with something that is causing the pump motor to not spin. It could be a coin or a hair pin or even a sock or something. Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.

When the washer initially fills for the wash, is it only hot water entering the drum? Try switching the water temperature between hot and cold as it fills. If any of them show little or no water getting through, it sounds too easy but check to make sure water supply taps are on, and that the cold/hot fill hoses aren't reversed. Remove the fill hoses and check any of the screen filters for blockage (in the hoses and in the inlet water valve). When the machine stops and waits to fill but all you hear is a hum, it sounds like there is power going to the valve but water is not able to get through it.
Good luck!
