2 month old ONKYO TX-SR706 speaker circuit problem
Suddenly, the left surround speaker started making a crackling noise, and during loud sounds, the entire receiver would turn itself off. I tried changing speakers, i.e., reversing them, and same problem, eliminating the speaker itself. I inserted a 3 feet speaker wire to this speaker circuit, same problem. I'm about to take to service, but if you have any ideas, please let me know! Receiver is almost brand new! Thanks.

Indeed, I took the Onkyo receiver to an "authorized" repair center and they confirmed that there was a defective chip in the product. I'm picking it up tomorrow and will report ont he results. I will say that although the service company has been great, Onkyo does not yet have many of them! I have to drive 50 miles and I'm in a major metropolitan area. Take that into consideration when purchasing new expensive equipment. Make sure none of your speaker wires are touching. I had this problem. I re connected the wires. If a wire is touching the case it'll short out. It has a built in cut out.
I still have a crackling speaker on one channel but it doesn't cut out anymore.

This is a problem with the surround sound processing. Effectively the digital signal is not being processed properly. Since this unit is so new, return it and request either an exchange or at least warranty service. The DSP board will likely be replaced.

I had this happen to my unit shortly after I purchased it. When I turned the receiver on there was a loud pop through the speakers, the red light on the front started blinking and the unit failed to produce sound.
A tack worked its way through one of the speaker wires, causing a short. I replaced the wire and unplugged the receiver for an hour. It's worked well for the past two years since this issue.
If you haven't done so already, check all of your speaker wires and plugs on the receiver and the speakers. You may have a damaged wire or metal-on-metal contact somewhere. Try these steps:
1. Unplug the unit and disconnect all wires and connections. Let the unit sit for an hour.
2. Check all cords for damage or crossed connections.
3. Reconnect the power cord and set the volume to minimum. Turn the receiver on. If it stays on, shut it off, unplug it and reconnect everything, taking care to ensure that speaker wires and/or plugs don't make contact.
4. Plug the receiver in, set the volume to minimum (it should already have this setting after step 3) and turn it on.
It sounds like there is a short somewhere in either the wiring or the receiver. This caused the popping noise and activated the receiver's protection circuit. If it's a damaged wire or plugs or wires making contact, you can reset the unit with the directions above, replace or separate the wires and all should work. If the issue is within the unit, you'll have to contact Onkyo directly.
The best way to fully isolate the fault is to disconnect all the speaker wires, and verify that there are no strands of wire shorting between the speaker terminals on the rear of the unit.
Turn the volume all the way down, full CCW, and if it goes into shut down with theSTBY light blinking then there is a fault in one of the amplifier's.

Try some troubleshooting to check whether its the turntable or the the receiver.
What happens if you exchange the output cables of the turntable from left to right. Does the problem shift?
Does the sound changes from left to right speaker?
Similarly try on the inputs of the Receiver.. does the problem shift...?
This way you will be able to isolate the problem, whether with the receiver or the turntable....
I have the same reciever, and had the same problem. Contact Onkyo, this is a known issue where defective DSP chips were used and manifest problems with a popping / clicking sound when using surround settings. These receivers also have a Dolby Digital input issue that can cause audio dropouts when watching cable or SAT broadcasts that encode DD using a 'newer' broadcast encoding methods. Onkyo is covering the cost of that repair for me now, even though the receiver is 5 years old now....
If you are connecting a 5.1 surrround sound rather than 7.1, have you connected the surround speakers to the surround left and surround right rather than surround back left and surround back right?

Shooting in the dark, and saying the obvious(just bear in mind a month ago I was going crazy over a problem that ended up being the blanace knob turned to the right) - could it be that you're not using a digital signal? I'm not sure you can get surround with analog.
Make sure all settings are for digital, and that you're using a coaxial/optical cable going from the DVD to your receiver.

So your saying that you have no rear channel. Some recivers use a single stereo output ic for both sides on the rear speakers. you could have a defect with this IC . Anther thing Im sure you check3ed the obvious ie : the switch is on suround sound? If there is a front to rear fader is it in the middle? Good Luck
