I have a G.E. Profile PSS23MSWASS,model RM427537 side by side fridge/freezer, I cannot get freezer toto below 17, everything is melting, fridge seems fine.

I removed all items, unplugged unit for hours, removed ice tray (ice maker still works fine)? The controls are electronic. Noticed a small amount of icing on far wall of freezer, removed it. Waited till this morning, and still no luck. Any suggestions. My 5 year warranty was up in Nov/12 Thanks Cathy

Sounds like a defrost issue. Probably need a service tech look at it.

This sounds like the float mechanism has gone bad. Remove it and have a look. It may be the float or the switch on it that is bad. There is also a solenoid valve. Parts kits are available. Shut off the water first!

Pull the refrig out from the wall , and remove the rear panel . Touch the compressor and feel if its hot or running . If the compressor is cool , then the main control board is bad ( since the compressor isn't running ) . If you can solder , you can repair the board (another paragraph ) . If the compressor is warm , then you could have a thermistor or 2 bad . This would have to be checked by a technician , unless you know how to get into the diagnostics procedure . Also , see if the compressor cooling fan is working and the black squirl cage is clean of dust .

SOURCE: Hi. I have a GE GSS22WGMC side by side and for a

you might have 2 problems. First I think you have either a defrost problem or a evaperator fan problem.

Look at the lower back wall of the freezer and if you see frost build up then you have a defrost problem.

also open the freezer door and press the door switch button that makes the light go off and listen for the fan. if you don't here the fan its a good chance that it could be bad.

I would wait on the ice maker issue until the cooling issue is resolved because it could be causing the ice maker problem.

If you dont here the fan then ckeck it in 60 min again and if you still dont here the fan it is mostlikley bad.

If you do have the frost then one of the following compontents could be bad: Defrost heater, Defrost limiter or the Defost Timer.

Hey i have problem with my fridge. my problem is freezer is melting ice. so i did all research and ended up with this. my heater is busted. i bought a kit, the "thermostat" with the 2 heater...

Defrost water will drip on the heater and ice should melt off. Did you get the proper thermostat ?

Freezer compartment freezes okay to at least -5 degrees fridge will not cool below 17 degrees

Typically, the fridge gets its cool air via a vent from the freezer. If this vent becomes blocked, then the fridge won't cool. If there is nothing obvious blocking the vent (like a plastic bag) on either side then it is possible the vent is clogged with ice. To fix this, move your food to a cooler and unplug the fridge long enough for the ice to melt (12-24 hours).

Water was frozen all inside the freezer and fridge temp was high

Self defrost mechanism may have an issue. If it stays on too long you will have excessive temps build up in refrig as well as freezer. There is also a defrost thermostat that is supposed to turn compressor back on when temps get too high - check that out also.

GE side by side (purchased 2005; don't know exact model)

Defrost timer issue is my guess. It is generally located behind the rear inside panel in the fridge section. I'm guessing about $150-200 or so to fix it.
