Can I upgrade my graphics card?

Hey people.

I recently bought a "bargain" pc, just over $400.

This is my exact system, which is rather sad, I know now.

I sent an email to Emachines, and was told I COULD upgrade my graphics card. Now, this is coming from Emachines themselves.. yet... I see no extra slots for a graphics card. In fact, its such a small case there is hardly enough room for what is there.

Was this Emachines guy pulling my leg? I did give him my model/serial number, so he knows exactly what I have. This is what puzzles me.

Thanks for the help. =)

p.s. This is part of the email I got in response to my original:

"Thank you for contacting eMachines. I’ll be happy to assist you.

I understand that you would like to upgrade the graphic card of your computer.

Todd, you can upgrade the graphic card of your computer. Please purchase graphic cards that are compatible with the PCI Express ×1 slot on the Motherboard of your computer."

    Wow! Fast replies, thanks!

    Here is my pc..http://support.gateway.com/emachines/ema...

I did just receive a diagram from emachines, it IS pretty small.

Any thoughts on how this upgrade would be, as far as games go? I added another gb , total is only 2 gigs, maxed.

I have a feeling I wasted my money on a pc that was designed for the "basic user". =/

  • Anonymous Feb 15, 2009

Ah, so Nvidia doesn't make one that would fit my pc. damn.

Guess I'll just save up, and until then... figure out how to squeeze as much out of this tiny thing as possible.

They do sell pci express 1x slot video cards, is it really much of an upgrade?? no
however here ya go
http://www.bizrate.com/graphicscards/matrox-millennium-g550-32-mb-pci-e-graphics-card--pid608664132/compareprices.html

  • Anonymous Feb 15, 2009

yes the matrox would give you a path for a video card however the nvidia is better at gaming than the matrox, and yes your fears of having bought a BASIC USER pc are true....build your own if you want a gaming system...much more rewarding

The card you posted would definitely be an improvement, however again like i said before, it would be such a minimal improvement that i think your money would be better spent saving for a new case+motherboard+video card. your cpu, hard drive, optical drive and windows license should all be moveable to your new pc, just get a decent case with a power supply, appx 85-95 dollars, a good mid range card, i think best buy has 9800gt's right now for lets say 189 dollars and a decent am2 mother board, i think you can even get an older 650 sli for about 159 dollars

    examples

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as... 179$ 9800gtx

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as... 129$ asus am2 board

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as... 89.99$ cooler master case with power supply, at that point you have invested your money wisely and have a system to be proud of

You could tell us you model number or look it up yourself on the e-machine website(Link provided below).  I do know that the PCIe x1 slot is only about an inch long. Maybe that is why you didn't see it?

I personally think you would be wasting your money on a PCIe 1 card. Thier aren't thaqt many available and even if they are they ae extremely limited by the band width. Just my thoughts. Amost all of the newer machines use a PCIe16 slot and even the old standard of the AGP advance graphics port was an emprovment over the regular PCI slot. Sorry.

  • Thomas F. Schneider Feb 16, 2009

The card does seem to be a good card and no one faults you for trying. It is of, of course , better that what you have, for sure.  My only consern was that you wished to play games and if you look at the minium requirments for most games these days i do not think that card would qualitify at 400 mhz and 256 ram. It would work on some games. I am not a gamer so,i can not say for sure. I decision is all yours. Go for it if you wish. It can't hurt it .

Upgrading vs. New PC?

I took a look at the specs for your Desktop PC... It's far outdated, so I wouldn't hesitate to replace it.
I just happen to be a bit of an expert in this field, and I'd advise you to avoid buying from a retail manufacturer (which is nothing more than rebranded hardware). If you're interested, I do have a service on here to provide help getting you the perfect Desktop PC (or even Notebook/Laptop if you'd rather go that route). My fee is cheap, and I'll surely save you more than that. Either way, no matter what you decide, be sure to research anything you buy before you do. Let me know your budget and we can go from there, if you're interested. But to answer your question, again... Yes, it's in your best interest to replace the system. (Your motherboard only supports up to 256 mb of ram, and that is older form factor, plus it won't even come close to the system requirements to run any modern Operating system.)

I hope this clears it all up for you. Have a great day, and let me know if I can help any further.
Please remember to rate me, Thank You.

Hi I have picked up a HP NX9010 laptop for cheap have upgraded to 1gb Ram but the graphics card is not great and just wandered if it can be upgraded and if so what will fit? I know its an old...

Hi there,

One of the problems with laptops is that the majority of them cannot get upgraded graphics cards. Its the nature of creating computers that are very small. You can sometimes get high performance laptops that do have discrete replaceable video cards but they are very rare. Sadly your NX9010 cannot get a better graphics card. Sorry for the bad news.

Removable Graphics Card: I have recently bought the NV5105u laptop but cant seem to find a site that explains if the graphics card is replaceable or not. thank you for your time.

Laptops today have the graphics integrated onto the system board. There isn't a separate card that you can replace if you want to upgrade or if something goes wrong.

I just bought a new pc. It worked in the store. I also purchased a graphics card and power supply upgrade. I switched out the components exactly as they were. I now have no power. what might be cuasing...

either the graphic card is not compatible or the power supply that you changed is not fit for the motherboard....
check this
1 switch on the machine....if u can view / hear the fan on the power unit at the back of the PC running then the power unit is working.
2 do u get any msg or charecter on the screen when you power on the manchine ? if yes then the graphic card is the issue....
3 the cables inside the PC that you connected of the power supply are not properly joined in the MB

well at the last i will ask if the PC was new why did u make an upgrade....u could have bought a better PC with the extended features ??? well that's ur choice...!!!

ok then....
just put back the original power supply and original graphic card to c if it works now....
then let me know pls...

Radeon graphics card and 3rd RAM slot conflict

I thought this board looked familiar to me. I recall some rules for the memory cards. Do all your memory cards meet this requirement:

Supports up to 3GB PC1600/2100/2700/3200* DDR SDRAMs

If you are using DDR 400 you can only use 1 slot.

What kind of memory are you using?

Suitable graphics card which would enable me to play games

The problem is that you can't just Upgrade the video card in a portable like you can a desktop system.

Upgrading the video would require a new motherboard with discrete graphics. VERY few portable system have upgradeable video without major cost (Usually cheaper to sell system and buy one configured as you need it) which is my recommendation if that system will not perform as you desire.

Generally, upgrades on portrable systems are limited to MEMORY, HARD DRIVES and plug in components like wireless cards, modems etc.

HOW TO ADD GRAPHIC CARD TO LAPTOP

it is not usually possible to upgrade the graphics card on a laptop. as the graphics chips are on the motherboard. and they do not usually have a graphics card slot.

some (quite recent) laptops have a graphics express slot which does allow for them to be upgraded.

most often you find that laptop graphics chips share mem with the main RAM (allocated) this is controlled in the BIOS(Setup) and it may be possible to increase the allocation of memory there,

but I'm sorry to say for most laptops there is no upgrade (flexibility is traded for portability)

the 5002WLMI does not appear to have a grpahics express slot, however you may be able to increase the mem allocation in the BIOS (as it does use allocateable shared memory)

Radeon FSC Graphics Display Driver

Go to this link armed with your exact model number(if you can't find this in windows device manager then easiest is to look on the card itself - unplug the pc first and don't touch anything inside unless you know what you are doing) then you can download the correct driver for your operating system if the card is compatible. Follow the download and install instructions and you should fix the issue. http://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894 If you need more help with this then please post again with your ati model number and your operating system version. Hope this helps :)
