You should try to connect a VGA monitor to your laptop and see what happens. It sounds like a video card failure, and often the hdmi and the VGA are powered by different graphics chips.
If it works with a VGA monitor, try to install a new driver for your graphics card. Otherwise, try a system restore. That often solves your problem.
If a restoration doesn't help, your graphics card is probably broken. Get a new laptop. Avoid Acer :)

SOURCE: Compaq presario v2000 monitor is having horizontal purple lines that flicker.

Try reloading the drivers, delete the device in device manager and reboot. It should then pick up the drivers and reload them, if that does not work I would suspect the screen is on its way out (flickering normally means the screen or its connection is bad)

SOURCE: black screen with horizontal green lines

Hello yoyoxide.

from my experience can be something related with the video card. I recommend you the followig (Hardware diagnostics):

-Look for one of the discs that came with your computer, it should say (Drivers & utilities).
-Boot from the CD. If you don't know how to do it do the following:
1.Insert the Drivers&Utilities Disk.
2.Restart teh computer.
3. When you get the Dell logo, press F12
4.Select Boot from CD/CDRW-DVD (something like that).
-You will get a prompt to run the diagnosics.
-Just follow the wizard
-I recommend you to run diagnostics for everything.
-You will see if you have any problems with your hardware.

It seems that you have a pretty new laptop, so probably it's under warranty.

SOURCE: have multi colored horizontal lines in screen

Lines on screen would be caused by a faulty screen. To solve this you must replace the screen.

The price difference in the cables are what type of metal wire that is in it. One might have copper or even gold plated and the lower price one might have some low end metal. I have not seen any difference. Yes, all you have to do is plug it in and Windows 7 will recognize your TV. You might want to go into the Control Panel and open Sounds and make sure you have the audio turned on for your HDMI connection. Your laptop screen and the TV will be displaying the same.

Horizontal red flickering lines on screen

I've seen this many times (red or pink lines) on an LCD screen when the video chip is over-heating... When is the last time you blew the dust out of the heatsink/fan area? Get some canned air and blow it out. Unless it's plugged really bad, the fan has died, or there has been permanent damage to the system, this should clear things up. Also, make sure you are using the laptop on a HARD surface, not actually on your lap, a pillow, couch, cloth covered table, etc. It needs airflow to keep it cool...

I haveMy compaq presario CQ40 and my monitor screen got flicker always for past few days and more red horizantal lines @bottom of the screen, where i couldn't see the data,time,date... Plz help me...

This is usually a sign of either a bad LCD screen cable, a bad LCD screen, or a bad display adapter.
If you connect an external monitor & you get a picture without these red horizontal lines, then your display adapter is OK.
Diagnosing a bad LCD screen cable or a bad LCD screen requires that you disassemble the LCD screen panel, & swap them one at a time with a matching part. This way you can identify which part is causing the problem & replace it.

When the laptop is turned on, the screen rolls & flickers. I can press on the sides & it stops.

Hello collensdrea,
Welcome to FixYa.com!
Sorry to hear what's happening to your laptop. I would lke to ask you to follow a few steps to check and see if this is a faulty display or not. Please follow the following steps:
1. Turn the laptop off 2. Unplug the AC adapter (if connected) and remove the battery 3. Press & hold the power button for 40 seconds w/o the battery installed or the AC adapter plugged in 4. Let go of the power button, reconnect the AC adapter and put the battery aside for the meantime 5. Turn the laptop on by pressing the power button and the second you turn the laptop on, tap F2 several times to load the laptop's BIOS.
What is a BIOS? This is a special screen that let's you make changes to your laptop's motherboard. Please do not wander around as it may cause the more problems if you are not sure of what you are doing.
The reason why we went here is to see if we can still recreate the same issue i.e. the screen rolls & flickers.
If it still rolls & flickers, I'm afraid you need to contact Acer to have your computer sent to Depot or serviced.

Hi..i am using compaq presario cq 40 and screen is flickering.i had it checked and they told me lcd is the problem but they didnt even bother to check.they just turned it on and they told me that i have to...

When it flickers, can you still see the text when the screen goes dark?
May have to use a bright flashlight set right on the display to see
the text on the screen beside where the light sits.
That will tell you if it's the backlight.

You can also look at a grazing angle into one of the edges to see if the
backlight is flickering when the display does.
When it's cold, does it start with a slight pinkish color? That can be
a sign of backlight going bad.
Anything interesting happen when you flex the cable by moving the screen?

I'm not saying it's impossible, but I've never seen software cause
consistent screen flicker. And if the vga port doesn't flicker, sw is
even less likely the problem.

If you bet the odds, you'd bet on a bad display cable.
Won't hurt to try replugging it.

If that doesn't help, then your monitor may be dying....

Monitor flickering and rolling

Thanks for the git back: #1 I hooked up a second monitor (depressed fn+f5) and was able to view everything fine. No problem in any area. Ran Some security checks (malwarebytes, checked windows updates,Secunia PSI,and a virus scan. #2 I opened up the monitor and checked for possible loose connections. #3 brought up the graphics display and checked that 60 hrz was set and correct. #4 ran a backup of all my data from my other monitor, and I made the assumption that it was a bad monitor and I might save some money if I just bought a new laptop.Would like to here your comments.
