On a USB hard drive when trying to "safely remove hardware"
Can anyone give a true way to determine why this happens... I have gone thru many answers including checking which processes may have a lock on the drive. None seem to have it... Not explorer, not recycle bin (config), not indexing, etc....
It seems to happen more when you have a NTFS hard drive than when you have a FAT32 hard drive.
Please only respond if you know what it is... No guesses
Just had it happen to me. Can't safely remove the external hard drive and it now appears empty. Don't know what to do. Didn't lose much important but, more importantly, I can't save onto it now.
Maxtor 1 Touch 4 Plus 1TB external Drive - When trying to disconnect get message "The device generic volume cannot be stopped right ow. Try stopping the device again later."
Have done the recycle bin solution - still getting message
Done the Use third party "process explorer" to remove processes which are using the drive. No success.
All suggestions so far are unuseful. There is not "Safely remove or eject" when I right click through My Computer.
Surely someone has a simple fast solution.
Why not try to use a separate program to safely remove the drive.

Thank you. I downloaded it - it didn't find any processes so couldn't force it or shut it down. It suggested I shut the PC down and then remove it. So really no solution to problem when running the pc.
