Do you mean the "steam wand" ? The pipe you would use to steam milk?
That sounds like the steam valve needs replacing or rebuilding. If the machine is only 8 months old it is still under warranty. You should contact the store where you bought it or contact Gaggia service center in your country.
1: do you pres the switch for steam and wait until it is ready?
2: how long time machine needs to be ready for steaming?
solution 1 =
if you don't press the steam switch on you will have very small amount of steam.
solution 2 = if the machine gets ready only for few seconds to steam, than you must change your steaming thermostat attached in boiler(there are 3 of them:
1 security
2 coffee brewing
3 steam
i hope you fix it soon and enjoy in perfect espresso
Propably the steam pipe is blocked from dry milk. You can use a thin steel wire insert it in the pipe from bottom. If you manage to open it a little bit and start having steam then by boiling water and leave the steam pipe imerse in it it will melt the remaining dirt and by open the stem valve then the dirt will spoot out. If not then the valve is blocked or broken.
The only thing that comes to mind is that the machine is in steam/hot water mode. Unless you replace the switch and turn off the steam light so that it sends the water to the correct location. Also you might want to remove the shower screen and make sure it is clean.
Remove the steam wand and inside you will find a small teflon like tube at the top, throw that away and run water through the wand to make sure it is clear then re-assemble in machine and test.
Push in on the steam knob, if that works, then the steam valve assembly needs to be replaced, tell the Tech where you bought the machine that you need to get the new stainless steel valve.
The steam valve tap rod needs to be replaced, or check machine if it has a plastic steam valve, Gaggia designed a new Stainless steel steam valve for the compact machine.
Does the steam outlet give water when coffee swith is engaged. If so when you get a flow going, shut the steam valve and water should eventually pout in the cup. If no water pours thru the steam pipe, it's pump failure or blocked wand. If no water at shower depending on last result same problems. Search web for solution i.e. google "jammed espresso machine"
