Hi. I am trying to open ports on my zyxel -p660 series modem (despite the fact that Earthlink claims not to block any ports). I am trying to use iChat video on my Macbook and it won't work. We've isolated the problem to the modem by connecting directly to it and running a check. Apparently all I need to do is open the ports. Is opening the ports the same as port forwarding? I saw a repspone to a question about port forwarding. Thank you so much for your help. I will be very pleased when this problem is solved.

Can you play with XBox Live *without* changing the MTU ?
If so, then the "default" value can be used.

More than likely it cannot locate the DNS for your IP services. What I do when this happens is completely shut down everything computer modems router etc. The restart the whole ball of electronics. Then I reset the routers if this does not work then I open IE8 and do a diagnostic usually IE8 will find the issue and either explain it or fix it. That is what I do. Try that the IE8 fix it process it works for me. Thanks for using FixYa! John

Hello again. I'm wondering about my LAN connection. What is it? Where is it? Im still trying to trouble shoot the iChat problem and have actually gotten iChat to work with one friend (she has a Toshiba Satelite laptop) but not with another (Dell laptop) or my daughter's friend who has the same computer I have. Apparently there is more to the problem than just opening the ports. Someone on the iChat discussion forum mentioned that both the Airport Extreme (which is the router I have) and the Zyxel modem both route. They said something about LAn connections -- and DCHP but they didn't offer any clarification. Are these settings something that can be changed? Are the router and modem both trying to access IP addresses ? Thanks!

what you need to do is first check what port you ichat video is using then you need to log into the modem page,
at the centre you will see something that says NAT under advanced setup click on that..now you should see a dot in the SUA Only setting,if there is a dot in the SUA Only setting, go ahead and click Edit Details.then you will need to put in the port number that you ichat video software is using, the start and the ends port can be the same incase you i chat is using a single port...and put in the ip address of the computer from where you are trying to use the service and then click on save settings this should help.restart both the devices...and it should work
