Sounds like an internal wiring circuit problem. It's strange that the screen lights up but the flash doesn't charge. You should probably get it checked by Canon.

Make sure it is not set to manual 'M' on the display. To get it to shoot in ETTL (Through the lens) press the mode button and it should read ETTL in the top left corner. This then means that the light is metered thorugh the lens and you are not relying on the manual settings.

Hope that helps. I had the same problem when i first got my.
By the way a brilliant all round bit of kit. I have traveled the world to some fairly extreme temps and got it wet (Rain, humidity, sea spray to deserts and serious dust) All good.

Good luck

SOURCE: Flash is acting weird...

The problem with troubleshooting is that you have to try different things to see what changes when you do something different. Try new batteries, then try another set, then connect the flash to another camera and see if you have the same results. In my opinion, I'd have to say that it's probably the flash but like anything else, you have to try different things. Try using a different flash unit to determine if it's a flash issue or a camera hot-shoe issue. Once you find the culprit, then either replace the flash (hopefully this is the issue because it's cheaper) or it may unfortunately be the body. Hope this helps... just try a few things and cancel out what's working vs. what's not working.

SOURCE: Canon 50D doesn't recognize new Speedlite 430EX

Check the contacts on both the camer and the lens. I usually clean mine with methylated spirits or isopropyl alcohol. I have to do this every 3 months or so as dirt or even oils from your hands can stop the contacts from working properly.

Check the diffuser is fully retracted. Pull it fully out then all the way back in.

New batteries still no power-up

Check the contact in the batt compartment for obstructions or corrosion etc. No power means broken circuitry - either physical dislodgement of electronic/ electrical parts or damaged electronic components.

Battery acid damage on canon speed light 430ex

You'd have to open up the flash (I don't recommend) and replace it by soldiering a new one in place. If you can't make you're own contact or salvage/fit one from another source you must send it in for repair.

Just got a Canon 7D. Attached my 430EX to the hot shoe and it won't fire. Tried new batteries and checked the contacts, and it still won't work. Put th 430EX back onto my Rebel XTI, where it has always...

Make sure you using flash grade batteries and not rechargables. try energiser ultra or litiums or duracelll plus but nothing else. if the charge light is not coming up then most likely batteries. I would take it to your local camera shot and test your 7d with one of thier 430 just to make sure the hotshoe didnt short out the flashgun

Speedlite 430ex, pilot light on, flashes when I hit the pilot, but will never fire when taking a picture....the "ready" light below the red pilot light never turns on

Typically, it means your batteries are low but I am sure that you know that already.
The next cause is a mechanical failure. The flash has capacitors that **** up the battery power until they have a full charge and the trigger the ready light. Therefore, if your batteries are good then it is likely that the capacitors are disconnected or have failed. Eitherway, you will most likely have to send it out to a Canon service center. You can find service centers at www.canonusa.com.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

The flash won't fire, and the pilot light won't come on. I've tried new batteries, and that doesn't work. The little LCD screen does have power. I'm wondering if I blew the strobe. Thanks!
